What Kind of Mileage to Expect?

    1997 Jeep Wrangler
    I'm looking to buy a 1997-1999 Wrangler as a second vehicle. I have my eye on a 1997 Wrangler Sport, all manual with 216,000 miles. How many miles can I realistically expect it to last? If it'll run to 300,000, I'd be good. Whatcha think? TIA!

    Welcome to the forum.

    My personal opinion. I'm a huge beleive in regular maintenance. If it was maintained at regular intervals. You could possibly get another 80k out of her. But, my first thought. At 216 k. I'm sure some things have already been replaced. Any idea what the history of it is? What's been replaced? What kinda shape is it in?

    Welcome to the site! Longevity depends on maintenance. If you stay up with maintaining it, no telling how long it can last. Ive destroyed a transmission in 4 months, while a friend of mine traded in his truck with over 700,000 miles on it. Take care ot it, and it will last. :)

    Ask for a Carfax. If it was Dealer maintained. You could get an idea of what's been done to it. But, just as a buyer beware note. A buddy bought a car that was "supposedly" dealer maintained and reported to Carfax. Not a Jeep. But he paid 10 for it. And ended up putting another 5k into it just to get it running "safely". Bottom line. Carfax only knows what's reported. But, it might give you an idea where she's been.

    Oh, and if you can. Ask if you can take it to your mechanic before you buy it. If they say no. Walk away. No....run away.

    If it is a 4.0 Ibelieve average is 250k some less some more. Everybody has heard of that 400000 mile Jeep, but I haven't seen one yet.

    IMO 20 yr-old vehicle plus 216,000 miles with questionable maintenance could mean a lot of worn parts. Better be somewhat handy because a variety of issues could crop up besides the engine, trans such as frame rust, t/c, axles, etc but I'm a softie for a TJ in pristine shape.

    On a stock Jeep with the 4.0 you should expect 16-18mpg depending on driving style. While the 4.0 lasts "forever," I'd make sure that it has been well maintained, as others have mentioned. I'd recommend having a reputable shop near the location of the Jeep take a look at it and give you their opinion. Good luck!
