3550 fluid change

    1511627190772946296857.jpg I was going to change the MTF today. I'm a bit confused at the fill plug on my 2002 TJ. I was never under the impression that it took a torx bit. Anyone have any idea of the size? It's way bigger than a T-40, which is the largest i own. I was always told it was a 17mm Allen. Also, I wonder why the builders were so adament about the "don't remove" warning on the plug.

    Thanks for the video...however, this was one of the many videos I watched this morning. Along with scouring all kinds of internet articles. This video depicts the fill plug as the exact location of that strange plug with the torx head. To make things even stranger, the drain plug has a very large hex head as opposed to an Allen head as well.

    Thanks Chris. You're probably correct. I found a T-50 socket and it is a bit larger than that. I'm wondering why I appear to have different fill and drain plugs than everyone else. The warning on it spooked me at first.

    Could be a mid year change, or the original one stripped out, and it was replaced with that one. I would remove it first before doing anything else. For one thing, to make sure something strange doesn't happen when removed. And second, to make sure you have a venue to fill after its drained.

    Thanks Chris. I'm with ya on that thinking. I notice pipe thread tape around the plug. I don't remember ever having to do that myself. Had another strange issue with my distributor today too (may be another thread). I'm beginning to think that the previous owner had this Jeep serviced by Moe, Larry and Curly.

    Still looking around the net and watching videos. Reviewing the video by chris4x4, the ribs on that tranny doesn't look the same as mine. I searched my Vin and the build sheet says it came with an NV3550. I found this article and this AX5 looks more like mine. Is there an easy way to identify? I hope a previous owner didnt replace an NV3550 with an AX5...

    Thanks Chris. Your video has confirmed my fear that the NV3550 had been swapped out for the AX5 by a previous owner. On the pic you provided for the fill plug, I'm not sure how that could be it (assuming you meant the blue one at the top left of the Photo) I have 2 wires coming out of that plug.

    Everything I have found indicates it as the fill plug. The one that is the Torx and says "Do not remove" is for a ball detent for the reverse gear? Maybe someone else with a bit more insight can jump in.
