    1995 jeep wrangler
    my 1995 jeep wrangler 4 cyl auto. will not start untill the check engine light is on,.
    you turn the key on and wait 30sec. to a min. if the check engine light is on, it
    will start right up. can anyone tell me what causes this..

    @aggrex The 95 is pre-OBDII code software. Is there a code reader for it?

    From what I have found, OBD 1 is for years 1991 thru 1996....?

    Because I like to play with YJs I have purchased service manuals for them. Couldn't play without them. Some of the more modern 80s cars and trucks had OBD1 as well I believe. From what i have read, the problem with OBD1 is that each manufacturer had its own coding so you had to have a code reader for each. OBD2 was mandated by the feds to make a universal code that was accessible by all more easily. For OBD1 you are supposed to be able to count flashes for code numbers, but I don't know the essentials of the trick. I will research this some more, but as of yet I really have not needed it.

    Well, your off to a flying start dude. You presented an issue we have not seen. And since I am in no way as knowledgeable when it comes to code reading and issues with older Jeeps as other members do. So Im gonna sit back and read this one and try to pick up tips that other members post. Can never be over educated. Is that such a thing. Lolll.

    I read somewhere else that to get to the code reading mode in pre-96 Cherokees you have to turn the key 5 times.
