Note: You may have seen this thread at other forums and yes it is MY topic and a list I worked hard to create.

Noticed another forum member's question about "What is a basic gear items list one should keep in the jeep?" With your help, I'm hoping to create a detailed list of possible items for all those interested as their check list. Copy, Paste this check list and save for future reference.

Not bad, but missing a couple knives ( I keep 1 large, 1 small, and a Swiss Army ), and perhaps a firearm depending on state laws.

Nice list. Briefly I would suggest: high lift or bottle jack, tarp, cable ties, spare tire, GPS, xtra fuel, large axe, bow saw, towels, leatherman, misc quart-size jeep fluids, cooler, tire gauge, blanket, beer + alcohol

TROOF!! Honestly, I think it depends on the adventure you are setting out on, and space you want to fill up. I try to carry the minimum needed, but still be prepared.

    Trail Blazers,
Thank you for your respective recommendations. These are the types of recommendations I had hoped for.

Additionally, what specific tools and specific replacement parts do people carry for back-country travel? For example, during our last monthly 4x4 club meeting, an experienced TJ owner/builder/restorer presented his list of "absolutely required trail parts and tools" that he always carries based on his vehicle's failure rate and, most importantly, based on his personal driving habits and propensities towards extreme rock-crawling. Although I don't think I will be carrying a spare drive shaft nor all the major suspension components he typically carries, I was duly impressed by his stories and examples of what, I describe as "field engineering" or "trail ingenuity." One specific example that he described in detail was how to seal-off a severed brake-line. Because the stock brake-line material on his TJ is more ductile than is the brittle brake-line on a JK, one needs to hammer flat and work-soften the JK brake-line in order to folding it over upon itself in order to affect a tight seal.

Again, any recommendations and/or specific similar field-repair stories would be of great interest and usefulness. Thank you.

    Matthew

After belonging to Jeep Clubs for over thirty years, I have been amazed many times by watching and participating in many trail fixes. It is always much more fun when it is not your vehicle being fixed. One issue that I had a few years back was when my fuel pickup sock got clogged due to age. So the Jeep quit running, miles from the nearest asphalt and it was just me and the wife. It took awhile to figure this all out, but I ran a long spare rubber fuel line into the tank and the other end into my external fuel pump. That got me home. Another one that comes to mind is when a guy busted a front axle ball joint on a club run, this required fetching a trailer. The list and memories go on and on.

You are usually not prepared for what causes you to brake done as you can't bring everything you think you might possibly need. I broke down in my 78 bronco twice; the first time was a flat- I put the good spare on. the second time was the fuel pump. I got a tow to the nearest parts store(pep boys). Got a new pump and rubber line and fixed it in their parking lot.
