Smoke under the seat?

I have a 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport. Saturday as i was on my way to work taking the highway all of a sudden i started to see white smoke coming out from under the passenger seat. i pulled over and got out and also notices smoke coming up from the glove box. i drove it all weekend no highway so no speeds over 50. As i went to work today on the highway again it started to smoke in the same area. It was not over heating and my coolant levels has not dropped. It was not doing it before and i took it on a long 16 hour road trip. My jeep is very loud after going on the road trip, the window switches will not work except on the drivers side, the door locks stopped working completely, the clock on the radio goes on and off and sometimes the speakers switch back and forth. I do not have electric seats so i already ruled that out. I am not sure what it could be at all. It almost smells like its electrical which would make sense but i have checked the radio wires which is where i felt it was coming from and didn't see any burning on them at all. does anyone have any ideas on what it could be?

 

thoughts-
the cabin fan may be dissipating the smoke.
HVAC (heater) Fan working all speeds?
coolant - look in radiator not just recovery bottle....
Fuses - underhood and in cab.
"My jeep is very loud after going on the road trip" is the issue an engine exhaust leak?
that smoke would migrate into cab if it is underhood as HVAC may draw it in...

Door locks/windows/ suggest a wiring issue (common) often a broken wire from thr door to body harness.
What is your wiring skill - often a test light or DVOM and wiring diagrams is needed.

radio on and off - is this an added on or the original jeep radio?

 

the fan works at all speeds, i did just have to replace the blower motor resistor a few months ago. I did check and replace fuses as i needed to just incase that was my issue.

im thinking it might be an exhaust leak but i am not 100% sure.

i have a test light just was not sure of exactly where to check since there seems to be a wiring issue all across the vehicle.

it is the original radio, has been doing this since i got it.

Just to be safe, crawl underneath the passenger side and check the floorboard above the exhaust for rust through and make sure your carpet is not getting burned. Also check for a busted muffler. This would not account for the smoke near the glove box but for safety sake it would be worth checking.

However, the blower motor resistor is underneath the glove box area. I would crawl back under there and check for burned/melted wires/plug.

 

As Awrench said broken wires between the door and the body are a common problem however since the windows work from the driver's switch only it sounds like the solder joints for the child window lockout have broken. This is a common issue as well and is easily fixed by hitting the solder joints with a soldering iron and a bit of fresh solder. There is a hack to bypass the switch by cutting and crossing wires in the driver's kick panel, i preferred not to go that route so I don't have the specifics on that. The hardest part of fixing the solder joints is getting the back of the switch control module off to get access to the solder joints. You can also buy new switch modules. The lock relays are in the passenger side door switch module.

I would try installing an aftermarket radio, sounds like the factory one is dying a slow agonizing death.

 

Welcome! Good information provided thus far. Particular smell of the smoke should help differentiate between exhaust > burnt electrical wiring > carpet burning etc . They usually have a distinct smell.

That is exactly what i thought. I bought an aftermarket radio but have not installed it because i was not sure if it was actually the radio going out or if it was a wiring problem. I dont think it is a wiring problem though because all the other lights work on the radio.

 

Thank you all very much for the advice. I am going to look into it later today. If i find out the source of my problem i will let you all know. This has been something new for me experience wise and i was not sure where to turn since there are issues with the vehicle already.
