I’ve done none, buts she’s lifted, gear ration done, 33s, and a nice little 12k winch
    Hey!
I’m new here just got my first Jeep a couple weeks ago, I’m in love!!
She’s a 2003 Wrangler X, has been changed up a bit I’ll post pics I have that (they are not recent - she has different tyres and wheels and a winch now! Also hard top on as it’s winter )
She has 88k miles, a breath of fresh air being manual (I’m British but live in CT, USA)
Looking forward to getting to know you guys (and girls I hope!) on here! B5CE9117-6805-4357-9B0E-588117F57CF4.jpg2D7EC751-EEFF-40F1-AF89-67E3A38986B2.jpg

    Thanks for all the welcomes!

Right now my list consists of -
    New tyres
    Upgrade the lights to LEDS
A new stereo and sound bar lol
A train horn - if I can convince the husband I need one
And some stupid stuff like making her more personal... I love jack skellington (nightmare before Xmas) so really gonna try and make that work somehow.

Today the engine light came on (and so it begins...) the dude said sometimes when it’s real cold some sensor sets it off and it’ll go in couple days so we shall see.

Other than that seems I need to find a club or something to take her out and get her dirty and see what breaks first I guess ‍♀️

And first off, I need a Haynes!

Get an OBD2 scanner or a scanner dongle that works with your phone (bluetooth or wifi). They can scan and delete codes as well as show real time sensor information while you drive.

And you definitely need a train horn.

YES! Haynes over Chilton every day. If you can find one; I really like the Dealer service manuals in full paperback format. Don't like the CDrom.

Not surprising as your jeep is 15+ yr old. Some of the auto parts stores like Advance Auto offer free use of the scanner to read the CEL or codes. Zeros in on the problem and directs the repair process. Relatively inexpensive to buy a decent one which can be super handy. Better versions read ABS or SRS codes which paid off for me recently as my scanner identified exactly which wheel speed sensor had failed triggering the ABS and 4WD lights. Post the codes for tips/ recommendations.

I’ve got an OBD, cheap crap from Walmart but I figure it’ll do for now... will check her in the morning and see what it says (I would have tonight, but I have a know it all almost son in law) who doesn’t actually even own his own car, let alone anything else.... and... well how do I learn anything without doing it myself?
I have all the basic owner stuff, didn’t know there was a dealer service manual? Can I download and print that or should I check eBay etc?
    Thanks again!

The guy (who my husband works with- hence the purchase at a really good price) said the 02 sensor is what plays up in the cold and it’ll go away again itself .
I however trust nobody, and so want to make sure my girls good instead of assuming he’s honest...certainly as most problems can be fixed kinda easy if dealt with straight away.

So I checked the code and it is indeed the o2 sensor as previous owner said... which is cool, nothing to worry about as it’s normal for her. But, anyone know why it would cause a code when it’s real cold? Seems it’s an intermittent problem it’ll Come and go over winter? What could be the cause of it?
    Thanks again!

You need a new sensor if it is tripping a code it is malfunctioning. They are less than $50 and easy to change out.

O2 sensors provide important data to engine computer so my vote would be to change them at your next opportunity. Faulty O2 sensors could affect engine efficiency and fail testing at local DMV

Kinda what I was thinking, as ‘normal’ as it may be, obviously there’s a cause.
I’ll certainly get onto changing them out.
Thanks for clarifying for me guys!

You didn't mention which O2 sensor it was. The pre-catalytic converter O2 sensor sends data to the computer and helps determine fuel trim and such, the post catalytic converter O2 sensor is for emissions. Given the fact the engine runs fine I suspect it's the post cat sensor. You could get away with not changing it but it's a pretty easy job and not that expensive.

The fact that it only does it when it's cold may be because the computer dumps extra fuel into the engine to try and get it warmed up and the failing O2 sensor may not like the increased emissions or raw fuel.
Some say the engine coolant temp doesn't come into play during the open loop /closed loop operation however from personal experience it does. I believe it was my 97 XJ that had the temp sensor come unplugged enough to not make contact but not enough to be visible and it ran rich (too much fuel) and ran like crap. Once I re-seated the sensor connection it returned to normal operation.
During open loop the PCM operates on predetermined programming to get the engine up to temp, Closed loop reads the inputs from various sensors and the PCM makes adjustments to make the engine run as best as it can.
