I have a ticking noise in mine on start up but only on rare occasions. Sounds like a lifter not pumping up. I want to take the head off get valves done and replace lifters , install roller rockers etc. I don't have a shop or even a garage to do it in. I personally don't like doing interior motor work under a shade tree.

Not today but recently... deglazed cylinders and installed new pistons, the piston slap is gone for now. Did the break in period and took it on a 450 trip, it did great.
Just before my trip I also installed new tires (265/75/16 Falken Wildpeak AT3W) which corrected my speedo and brought my gearing:tire ratio back close to stock. It ran great down the highway and I think it looks pretty good.

Pic is from this last weekend as I was fully loaded headed to a camp trip.

XJ looks great and good choice for the road trip. Missed the part where your gearing needed to be adjusted closer to stock. New axle or gears?

I have a 5 speed so factory gearing was 3.07. As a cheap gear change knowing I was going with slightly larger tires I picked up a set of axles from a 99 Auto Cherokee with 3.55 gears.
The math suggested that with about 33" tires I would be back close to stock, 265/75/16s are about 32". Of course the math doesn't account for the additional weight of the larger tire. I didn't have to change the speedometer gear and at 50mph I am only 1mph off so I will take it as good.

I was running with some worn 30"s which were really closer to 28.5" when new and my speedo was way off at highway speeds and it just seemed like the 4.0 was screaming, though it really probably wasn't it was just higher RPM than what I wanted to be running down the highway. Now I can cruise at 65mph turning about 1900rpm.
