I am in the process of replacing the driveshaft in my CJ with a double cardon shaft. I took the old yoke off and installed the new one. Had a little trouble getting it to seat so I whacked it with a 4x4 a couple of times. Yeah I wasn't thinking at all. I didn't hit it that hard but now my output shaft has a lot of play back and forth. What did I damage? What do I have to do to fix it. Live and learn I guess.

Holy crap. Your in luck. We have a great drive line guy. The best hereee by far. I think he's resting from the grilled cheese sands he ate. A lactose thing I assume. Lol..But he'll check in. Hold tight dude.

Well I am hoping it is a simple fix. I have another Dana 20 if it isnt. Its just I am doing a frame replacement so of course everything is painted and clean....the other Dana is not.

Sounds like you seperated the bearings when you whacked it. Dissasemble, press off old bearing off of the output shaft, press on new bearing and reassemble. I have been inside the dana 20 a couple of times, and I feel it is a pretty simple setup for those that are mechanically minded. If it was me Id try to drive it like it is before I went to the trouble of rebuilding it.

    Really no whacking.

Thanks for the answer and the compliments. Before this tear down I added power brakes, and a hydraulic clutch. During this down time I put the headlights on relays, added a True Trac to the Dana 44. Attempting to go TBI. Stainless brake lines, tie rod flip, and a double cardon drive shaft. Also have a Cougar fan and a Volvo fan relay to work into the mix. I started back in November but the garage is too cold. Once I got it tore down to the frame I was pretty much banished till it started warming up in the spring. Here are a few more pics of my project:

OHIO, well I took the back off the Dana 20. By hitting the yoke with a 4x4 what I did was push the shaft out of the rear bearing. I took the seal out and used some PVC to tap the bearing back onto the shaft. Put a new seal in it and re-installed the bugger. The new yoke had a dust shield that would not fit over the snout on the back of the TC. The old shield would not fit over the step on the new yoke. Well a BFH and some 2" PVC cured that. It was thin enough to form around this step. I put it all back together and used the nut to seat the yoke this time....lesson learned.

What will @JKBob 25 do if whacking is not allowed?

Let’s be thankful that activity is not tolerated in public areas. Now out in the boondocks miles away from the border anything is fair game.
