Hi I have purchased my second jeep wrangler, the first one a 1995 now a 2007, I got my Jeep about 3 months ago and just last week I check the oil and I needed to add 3 quarts of oil, I have never notice a leak, anyway now it has a knocking noise and my mechanic stopped by to check it and told me that I need to get a new engine, I was checking on line and come to find out that the 3.8 lt is very common breaking down at a very early age, mine has 109,000 miles, now I am in search for a replacement but not so expensive, please help!!!!!

I dont know why Jeep decided to do away with the bullet proof 4.0 and go with a mini van engine? The same guys tried square head lights, and see what happened there, lol.

Any who, I got my 4.0 engine and tranny from these guys 2 years ago. http://www.powertrainproducts.net/

There out of MD and have a great warranty. They were not very friendly to deal with but my transaction went great. They dropped shipped the engine and when I called 2 days later they sent a truck to pick up the core. I have not had one issue at all with the tranny or engine. I see your in MD you may be able to save shipping and swing by and pick it? My original 4.0 had 275,000 miles on it. :bananadance:

Jeep was not legally able to keep the 4.0 as it could not pass the new federal emissions regulations.

Thats part of it, but not all of it. Jeep engineers said it was more about the tooling for the engine was wore out and Jeep decided not to spend the money to keep an old engine line going and get emissions up to par. In this article they explain it close to the end.

I also think, but cannot remember the exact book but think it was in The Story Of Jeep edition 2 a Jeep engineer did an article about it also that confirmed what Bob Shieves said. I will try and find the engineers article to confirm the claims.
Jeep could have chose to keep the line going and get it all up to par for the emission folks, but they chose to go another way for 2007 jeeps and later. Sad day for Jeeps in my opinion.

Found this, this guy did it for me. lol http://www.jk-forum.com/forums/jk-talk-26/my-report-jeep-engineers-speak-4723/

I see a lot of 3.6 motors for sale from people who are selling them due to v8 engine swaps. The 3.8 is a good motor, but it doesn't like to be overreved. It will spin crank and shaft bearings.
    Good luck.
