My mom's 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited broke down on her a couple of days ago. The car had a vibration when she drove anything over 40 miles per hour. On her way to work a couple of days ago there was a grinding slapping sound and she pulled in to a convenience store and tried to put it in park but there was a loud grinding sound and it wouldn't engage in park. She tried to put it in drive to drive all the way into the parking space but it didn't move and try to reverse it and I didn't move and when she put it back in park the loud grinding sound came again so she just put the emergency brake on and we had to leave it there.

When I got under the car inspect the only thing I seen wrong where are the U joints on the front drive shaft connecting to the transfer case, there was one missing bolt and the other three bolts were loose. I didn't have tools so I had to finger them. When I jumped out from under the car and she tried to go through the gears again, the problem remained...

My uncle thinks if I remove the front drive shaft it'll fix the problem, but just like my drive shaft broke and I was still able to drive it and still driving it without the drive shaft in there today, so I don't think the front drive shaft is causing the gears to grind or taking away the ability to drive forward and back up... It sounds like a transmission problem. Can anybody take a look at this video and give me a second opinion?

Her transmission dipstick has been missing for almost a year. We assumed in order to add fluid, we had to take it to the dealership. I started a thread a month or so back asking about this...

go to junk yard that has BIG sale and get a dipstick.
Or if not available there a jeep dealer.
    check fluid.
    answer question about CEL.

An ounce of prevention but I suspect a pound of cure is the situation.

Going to have it towed now. I'll look at the CEL and get back with you shortly.

The CEL light is on when I turn engine on. Here a video of the engine and me switching through gear Park Reverse Drive. My uncle swears up and down it's a transfer case problem and wants me to take out the transfer case... What do you guys think?

what gear is the transfer case in?

Is it a pushbutton transfer case?
If yes - I would check the circuits that control shifting - and that would be a scanner to start.
removing it when it is in N would not correct issue -

I can't find her transfer case shifter to put it in neutral. Her Jeep says 4x4 but I can't find the shifter or a push button...

Sounds to me like there is a broken planetary in the transmission

What is that ? You've seen something like this before ? When we had it towed here yesterday, I started it up in shifted it into reverse and it jumped into gear and backed up when I hit the gas pedal. When I put it in drive to repark it, it made a loud clunk sound and it was back to the same issue, couldn't drive or reverse again.

Planetary gears are inside the transmission my brother broke his reverse planetary and his Chevy s-10 wouldn't back up for a year.rebuild transmission fixed the problem.

    slow down stop guessing...
    we do not know.
The transmission is electrically controlled. The transfer case is likely a NV140 based on not finding a shifter or buttons to suggest the other option, the NV140 has no shifter buttons etc.

Yes the sound is a concern, yes the neglect is damning, Yes the CEL on is an issue. we should deal with getting info first. AND the computer controls all and talks to us with CODES.

Just curious....did they flat bed tow or drag two wheels on the ground. Some tow drivers have no problem towing/dragging illegally parked Quadra-Trac Jeeps away with the tires chirping.

My other uncle has an OBD2 scanner, maybe I can get a hold of him and have him bring it. Can I not turn the key over like I do my Jeep to check the codes?

in the time you took to ask the question you could have tried the key on off trick to get codes - go try...

The transmission and transfer case codes may need a scanner - and a capable one at that not an inexpensive code reader.

Scanner read P0700 with no other codes. My uncle thought clearing the codes and removing the drive shaft would've fixed the problem but it didn't. Now he thinks cleaning or replacing the ESM (electronic shift module) will fix the problem. The way the transmission sounds, like something is broken, I'm thinking the problem is bigger than a faulty ESM. It's only recommended to clean or replace the ESM or consider it the issue if P0700 is accompanied by code U0404...the key trick didn't work with this Jeep but there is a key trick for this year and model, 3x and left on "On" the third time.

Agree on a bigger underlying issue as PO700 is just a generic code indicating an issue within the transmission control system. I had the dealer diagnose further because my scanner could not get the trans codes. In my case it was the shift solenoids but your JGC sounds way different.

you said only p0700 then you mention U0404 - Did uncle driveshaft's scanner retrieve that U code?

    FYI:
    U0404-IMPLAUSIBLE DATA RECEIVED FROM ESM*
    Possible Causes
    FCM CAN BUS DTCS PRESENT
    ELECTRONIC SHIFT MODULE DTCS PRESENT
