Just purchased a 2019 Jeep Wrangler Moab and the dealer installed a 2.5” mopar lift, 22” on 37s. When I inquired with the dealer about needing to regear due to the 22s on 37s, dealer says the Moab model doesn’t need regeared for any wheel size under 40s. Is this correct? I know it’s new, but I’m only getting about 12mpg but have heard others running 35s getting upwards of 17mpg.
This is my first Jeep and I love everything about it but also think the wheels and tires are a little too over the top so I may be over complicating things. Thanks for any advice.

From what I can find the MOAB came with a 32" tire and a 3.54 gear ratio, going up 5" in tire size I would look at getting it re-geared. The Rubicon has a 4.10 gear ratio so it may be able to get away with a little larger tire. And while you can still drive the vehicle without re-gearing as you found it's not quite a peppy or fuel efficient as it was before. I imagine the dealer didn't want to do the gear install especially if they weren't going to get any more money for the vehicle.

Welcome @jeep0335 ....with 37s regearing is the right thing to do. In addition one should update the jeep with a programmer for accurate AT shifts, speedometer and mpg calculations.

Just curious....did the dealer install the same heavy 22x37 spare tire on the tail gate? To each their own but IMO the 22x37s are expensive to replace, heavy, easily damaged and not good for off-road.

yep they sure did. I asked if they needed to install a aftermarket tire carrier and they said they installed the Mopar recommended spare tire upgrade for the 37 tire which does put the tire away from the bumper, but does nothing for the hinges. I see online there are other options out there highly recommended due to the mere size of the tire. The tires and wheels are going to be expensive to replace, which I’ll do at some point in the future, but for now just going to enjoy the Jeep. You’re correct, won’t be much off roading on 22s. I think it’s a good looking Jeep just a lil too dressed up imo. I debadged it the second I got home and it looks much better now but needs some 17s instead of the 22s.

Not having owned a Jeep before, I do not have any prior experience to compare the Peppiness to. It does have some, but for such a small vehicle I definitely would’ve expected more. MPG is even terrible. I’ll do the recommended re-gear and programming in the near future and update y’all on the difference. Thanks again for all the input.

Another issue with big tires is stopping the dam thing. Sometimes the vehicle in front of you will take care of that. I have seen a lot of guys add a larger brake booster to help out.

^^ +1 on all of the above.

It's truly sad, but after years on Jeep forums one thing I've learned is that if the conversation starts with "The Dealer Says", then the answer is no :) They excel at building Jeeps as cheaply as possible and charging as much money as they can for it. The "Bro-Dozer" look is super popular for new Jeep owners as they look cool (to a newb) and tend to sell quickly. Fortunately you're smart enough that you've already figured that out.

I'm not a JL owner, and the trans is a little different than the JKs I'm familiar with. That said, 32 to 37s is a big increase and needs to be regeared. As a comparison my wife's JK on 37s and 4.88 gears gets about 16mpg average. My JK on 40s and 4.88 gets 14.5mpg, it's not really geared for 40s.

If <<big IF they truly replaced the tire carrier with the Mopar then you're good there. And like mentioned above, throw a BBK on there.

You would truly be my hero if you did a modern day tribute to this :D

Good luck! You've got some great Jeep bones to start with.
