Fuel overflow at tank

Hi guys,
Probably an old issue, but my 2010 Wrangler (owned only for a month, 44k miles) just overflowed fuel at the tank, not from the filler hole, last two times I filled up. Lost about 1 cup before it stopped. Vent problem? Or the years old service bulletin fix? Also have a recurring check-engine-light. Bought new Mopar fuel cap, cleared code, and light was out for a week, but returned. Think the fuel overflow and light are related? Thanks in advance

 

I am not familiar with that vent system, but it does sound like a leak in the vent hose. Sometimes codes are slow to come up. You should determine just what code you have as they can really help locate the problem.

The in-tank check valve fails overtime then backflow from the tank comes back out of the filler neck after the pump shuts off. The gas spills over the side of the jeep. TSB replaces the old check valve with a flapper style check-valve above the rear axle.

 

I think the code was gas spilling out on his Jeep. Sounds like a bad check valve or maybe the tank was just full

Since the fuel is not spilling from the top of the filler neck (and on the Jeep exterior), but from underneath, I think I need to remove the skid plate and investigate the vent line, hopefully finding an issue which is creating the light also. I did find a site to order the Mopar part which was designed to fix the “spill out” problem. I may do that anyway if I don’t find anything underneath.

 

So, sad ending to fuel leak saga. Crawled underneath, found large crack in plastic piece at tank where fuel filler line connects. Was so rotten I was able to just snap off the fuel line, planning on replacing the male connecting piece, which I figured was threaded into tank. NOPE! It’s only sold with the tank! Oh, no! Not sure how it is connected to tank, but not really willing to put in a used one in case the same thing happens. Why I should have this problem with a 2010 with 44k miles is beyond me. Maybe previous owner hit something? Anyway, unless I attempt replacement myself, shop says $1100.

 

The steel skid plate (brace) offers only light protection off-road so perhaps a prior impact caused your problem with the plastic part. DIY replacement will be skid plate(brace) removal then dropping the tank+lines. Installation will be the reverse steps. Empty tank will be more manageable. Take care of any rust on the skid plate. Post your repair progress.

 

If you have any mechanical ability at all you can swap out the tank and save quite a few dollars

 

Wheree do you see the spil;led fuel?
Anyway knowing the code would help us here, if the vent valve fails then the pump system will not vent correctly and some will spill. Also as mentioned the fill roll over valves.
