93 ZJ Transmission Fluid Change

    1993 Grand Cherokee Limited 5.2L AWD
    This weekend I want to change the filter on my transmission and I also want to change the fluid type from what I currently have in it. Currently I have Dex Merc and I want to change it to ATF 4. Will I need to drain all the fluid out and replace it with ATF 4, torque converter and transmission? Or would I only need to do a couple to a few fluid swaps by draining it from the pan and eventually all the Dex Merc will flush out? Or is it even good to have a mixture of the two at once?

    Draining the pan only removes a certain amount of old fluid. A few more flushes would be needed to remove more old diluted fluid.

    What about having a mixture of the two if I did that? Is it ok for my transmission ? If not, how would I flush out all of it?

    Short of trans disassembly you won't be getting it all out. I think a few drain>fill>run cycles should be sufficient.

    Sounds sufficient to me...cftu because tranny disassembly is not what Im into right now... Someday but not right now.

    How many quarts are required for the drain from the pan?

    Dropping the pain....with filter change. 6 to 8 quarts. Not including the transfer case. Which is bout 2.2 quarts.
    Just be prepared. If you drop the pan. Your gonna need a fairly large pan to catch fluid.
