So new jeep overheats I took today off cause I couldn't get 3 miles with out it overheating.... so I'm working on it right now. Change the thermostat has a brand new water pump (it's still shiny) only reason I know it's new. Clutch fan works and electric fan doesnt. My 2 door doesnt even have a electric fan hooked up and it doesnt overheat EVER! So now to the question what else could it be I flushed everything I could think of. Didnt wanna put coolant in till I knew exact what it was ( money tight) so dont wanna waste it on a crap ton of coolant. What could this be? I burped it and all and still over heats. (There is water in there just to see what it does for the time being and it over heats!!!!) Sorry if this is all over the place

2000-2001s are notorious for cracking heads. If that isn't the problem you are having now it could be your next problem if it was run hot.

I put it on the road yesterday drove it to mattydale literally 10 miles round trip from my house and it puked everywhere. The title says 97 but the engine looks like a 2000 has no distributor.

Depending upon prior maintenance or lack of......there of maybe a clog or restriction through the system like the radiator. Water pump may be new but dysfunctional or impeller rotation could be suspect. Correct thermostat and installed correctly, right? Inspected for clues like oil / coolant contamination?

Well you are capable we can try some testing -

SO how about a FLUSH and FLUSH again, you can use water till we figure this out.
Maybe remove Thermostat and A flush from Walmart, not a budget buster.

We can look for - coolant in oil, oil in coolant, do you get heat, with cap off we can confirm direction of flow.

Now let us know when it puked coolant all over itself - where was temp gauge?

Will AC request turn on elec fan?

did you install water pump? see attachment,

    there are some thoughts

No oil in coolant. doesnt look like coolant in oil. I did not install water pump. Ac request does not turn on the fan. Temp gauge was at 230 when it puke all over it self like a drunk college girl. I will check direction of flow and water pump and let you know

as for the WP direction we could look at water/coolant flow with cap off - engine to radiator or radiator to engine.

Elec fan not on with AC or at 220+degrees - do you have a scanner to look at codes and maybe live data if needed?

I wish I was comfortable with simply hearing new thermostat - new is not always GOOD and thermostats are a easy simple old world component that is problematic in performance esp aftermarket parts. They can't get them right. So recommendation to flush with it removed was listed above.

We want this done soon, as there are only a few outdoor days left this year.

That's hard to do on an XJ since the radiator cap is out on a neck, you can't look down into the radiator.

My bad - mental picture vs reality, or reality vs academic - experience trumps all.

Was thinking a easy simple fast inexpensive* check to may be make user comfortable enough to do it all.

don't give up - one oops about a radiator cap and it engine time?

what about - remove the thermostat, the flush, the question about SCANNER,
We can look for - coolant in oil, oil in coolant, do you get heat,
Now let us know when it puked coolant all over itself - where was temp gauge?

Will AC request turn on elec fan?

Agreed...the engine swap card should be at the bottom of the deck

Ok so the swap idea is on the back burner for now tommrow I'll morning I'll go at it again and tell you what I find. It was at 230 240 when it puked and it came from the over flow tank and radiator cap nowhere else. Why would I need a scanner? Just asking. Cause I have no codes at all. And no electric fan at the moment its seized up completely.

How does it run? Good, rough?
If it runs good, and you can confirm there isn't any intermix (oil/coolant), a clogged radiator may be a culprit.
If the thermostat was failed in the shut position, the engine would be hot but the coolant in the radiator would not be as much since the theromostat would be holding most of it in the engine.
If the water pump was backwards it wouldn't be able to pull coolant from the upper radiator hose again not allowing the coolant in the radiator to become very hot.
It appears the coolant in flowing through the engine and into the radiator but is having a hard time dispelling the heat.
Radiators are not all that expensive (https://www.amazon.com/Spectra-Prem...47------------&vehicleName=2000+Jeep+Cherokee)

Just my thoughts on the issue anyways.....

It runs good. I haven't seen any oil intermix with nothing. I does have a slight oil leak from the pan (witch I'm replacing this weekend) but no signs of it mixing together. The coolant in the radiator is hot as hell got sprayed the other day by it when I was checking it.... my fault haha. But it seems to run pretty good for 230k
