    Hey Everyone,
So I purchased a after market flywheel inspection dust cover for my 1966 CJ 5 V-6 engine. I cant seem to figure out how to install it. The front transaxle is in the way. Do I need to disconnect the front transaxle in order to install the dust cover?
By the way, Jeepguy is excellent to deal with...

I think you are describing the front driveshaft. Go ahead and pull it, clean, inspect, and lube it. Replacing the bolts might be a good plan.

Thanks for your reply. So I am a below average mechanic. Ask me about food and I am an expert. Is this something I can do myself or should I have an actual mechanic do it. For example, when you say “pull it” is this something I can do or do I need special tools? Thanks!!

good morning maybe I can help on one end of the shaft ur should find a universal joint Not too familiar with the old jeeps but you should see bolts holding in the universal remove the bolts On the opposite end should be a slip yoke slide the shaft off of the yoke and remove it. Hope that helps I’m sure jim beam will replay he’s probably more knowledgeable than I am on the older ones.

LYFZGOOD is correct it just unbolts at the u-joints at each end and it will come right out. The slip yoke does not come out though. The older a vehicle is, the easier it is to work on and sometimes harder to find parts for.

    Hey Everyone,
Thank you! I’m going to do this myself. Just wanted to make sure it is basically simple and I would not need a gear puller or something. Should I replace the bolts in the u- joint?

Especially if they are the original bolts, although they might be u-bolts and if original are probably overstressed. The big box 4wd outfits do carry some replacements parts for the older CJs.
