I have a 1974 Jeep CJ5 with a V8 engine, this is the original engine that came with the vehicle.
I want to swap it out with a V6 engine for off-roading.
I would like to do as little work as possible, IE. Pull engine replace with new engine.
Is this possible if I find a 1974 Jeep CJ5 V6 or is there more to it than that?
Any/all advice is appreciated, thanks in advance.

Welcome from North Central West Virginia
    I don’t think they had V6 back in 1974 in a CJ5

The CJ5 used the Buick 225 V6 from '66 thru '71. A great engine with the H.E.I. ignition, with lots of torque. Although a slight down grade from a V8. I am sure it would be a direct bolt in. Just extend the fan length.

I did not know that I didn’t think V sixes came around until in the 80s. My bad

Thanks Jim, is there an easy way to extend the fan length?

Extending the fan shroud might be needed too.

A local auto parts should have a cooling fan extension spacer. I installed one on my CJ to convert from the clutching style fan to a fixed fan for crawling in the desert. Although you might be able to move your radiator closer to the engine as your CJ is designed to accept a four cylinder engine. The fan should be about an inch away from the radiator to account for fan flexing.

Both and scout around for a manufacture's shop manual.

While you're at it try to find an older Jeep Bible. Beyond the practical knowledge the adventures of Super Pup and quite entertaining.

I have another question. This jeep has a 3 speed manual transmission. To remove the engine I'm not sure how to disconnect the transmission from the engine. I see what looks like an inspection plate (see picture) between the oil pan and the manual transmission box. Will I be able to disconnect the transmission once I remove the inspection plate? Any info on how to remove the clutch connection would be helpful as well.
