I just turned 57 i used to have a 79 renegade CJ seven when I was younger now I am retired military disabled veteran from the Iraq war to get to the point the other day at my friends house inside the barn I noticed a CJ seven sitting in the dark he told me it was his fathers and it’s been in there for 10 years pretty much they put a new motor in and just never went back to work on it anymore like I said that was 10 years ago everything is extremely dirty and dusty but the body is in great condition been in the dry barn for 10 years out of the weather everything seems to be there the motor just needs to be finished up anyway I offered him $2000 and his dad said he’ll take that they have a clean title is this a wise deal to take this jeep out of its dark cavern hideaway for $2000 and work on it little by little I am retired pension from the military not rich so it has to be a little by little project is that a reasonable thing to expire for

Depends on how much you gotta put into it to get her running, but not many CJ’s out an about which is the most iconic Jeep imo. You got some pics of it?

Welcome @Iraqwarvet and thank you for your service. There are several jeepers in a similar jeep build and can be a good resource for you. Post some pics, start a build thread and get this build started.

@Iraqwarvet Welcome to the forum. At 57 you are still pretty young. I am 72 and my XJ is one of the things that keeps me going strong. Although I am retired I am very active in our local fire department. My Jeep is used for rescue work when it isn’t off reading. I don’t think there is any one on the forum that is going to tell you that older jeeps are economical. You, however, deserve to treat yourself to something you really want. It has been setting for 10 years so if it takes a year or two to get it roadworthy, no big deal. As for restoring it, look for rust. Everything else can be fixed but a rust bucket is just a headache.

Well thank you for your input that’s the first thing I noticed it has absolutely no rust or body damage and the new engine in it just needs to be finished installing it’s sort of sitting there crying out to me to save it four-speed Straight six even the tires are good good glass and mirrors only thing I noticed there’s no AC but I hear I can eventually get that done plenty a room

No pictures yet I’m planning on taking a up close and personal look of everything this weekend and take some pictures but so far the body is in good condition no bodywork needed no rust just 10 years of dirt they put a new engine in it but never did the rest of the work on the engine and that was 10 years ago all glass and mirrors are good four-speed Straight six engine even the tires are all good with no flats after 10 years these are the things that attracted me to it in the first place

I will get some pictures this weekend when I do my up close and personal inspection of it but The first and second inspection that I did so far shows that the new engine is put in about 3/4 installed, Front bucket seats and rear seat all good, all glass and mirrors good no bodywork needed not even any rust just 10 years of barn dust even the tires are good not even flat after sitting there in 10 years straight six four-speed let me see what seems to be there just not sure if it’s 85 or 86 yet

Knowing that hell I think I could put everything back together clean it up finish the install on the motor and get at least $5000 for it I’m only paying $2000 not that I would but it is a good argument power for the wife you know what I mean

Thanks for your reply basically just going to take a up close and personal look at this jeep this weekend and get some pictures but what I know so far by looking at it it’s either a 85 or 86 last year amc cj7 (I think)it’s been in this barn for 10 years they started the new motor install got about 3/4 done and and for whatever reason just stopped and it’s still sitting where it was 10 years ago no bodywork needed so far no rust spot it Glass and mirrors all good seats back and front good 4speed Straight six Hell the tires are even good no flats in 10 years I just think for $2000 I can’t go wrong hell hell I could finish the install clean it up and get five grand for it not that I would but thats a good argument point when the wife comes into it what do you think about that rationale

    paid cash for it.
Hey Iraqwarvet, it sounds like a fun project! $2000 is pretty cheap entertainment, and healthier than spending the day drinking beer with buddies. Jeep’s are extremely simple vehicles especially the old ones. There are 1000’s of inexpensive after market parts available. It would be interesting to see if someone could build a complete Jeep from Craigslist parts - I’d bet it is doable. I’m an old guy, and I have a JK on jack stands in the garage this winter to help me pass the quiet days of isolation from covid.
