Can any one give me the length of a front stock coil spring, on a JK 2007-2012 . I'm trying to determine if this thing has any extra lift. Right now it has, heavy duty rough country shocks. If I knew the length of a stock spring , I'd measure to my spring, and see if there's any difference, in length. Might give me a clue. It had a monster set of tire 3xxsomething 18. I sold those in a hurry, and put 265-r70-17 on new 17 standard rims. that helped lower it a bit, but it still seams to high. After putting those tires on I check my speed meter against a gps, behold, 60 is 60, 70-70, 80 is 80 right on the money. That also helped my steering problems. Any help on this spring thing will be appreciated

I’ll have to crawl under to get a compressed spring number

0A25DB24-0263-4E1E-853A-248D0959355A.jpg Hey @skyhookman! I’ll try and help you with that question! Of course, it’s not as simple as you think it should be, lol. JKs came with a range of stock springs, usually referenced in common parlance by the last two numbers and two letters. Rather than being model specific, the springs are spec’d according to the options of each Jeep. There is a small tag on each stock spring which gives the OEM number. The actual rating seems to be a closely guarded industrial secret - if someone knows it, please help us out, but I’ve never seen the actual numbers.
Ok, that said the range of front springs runs from 14 AC to 19 AC, at least those are the most numbers that you will see. The rear coils run from 55AA to 60 AA. For example, my bone stock, bottom of the line 2 door equipped with an AM/FM radio as it’s only option, came with 14 AC front springs and 55AA rear springs. It rolled on tiny 225/75/16 tires and basically looked like a postal truck most of its life. I bought some new Rubicon springs and shocks from a JKU that are 17 AC front and 59 AA rear. But I digress your question was length - my 14 AC measured 16 7/8” and had 6 1/2 coils. The 17 AC are 17 7/8” and have 7 1/4 coils. Similarly, on the rear, the 55 AA are 13 1/2” and have 6 coils. The 59 AA are 14 1/4” and have 7 coils.
So what does this mean? Hard to say, without the actual spring rating. The Rubicon these came off was a 2017 JKU with 4:10 gearing and a tow package. I’ve installed them on my JK and gained ~ 1 1/2” in height, but more importantly, the 2 door JK now handles fabulously! Tight, smooth, no body lean and feels really strong. Good luck!
Just as a post script, I changed the wheels and tires too - to a stock JK 17” wheel with a stock size tire 255/75/17. It’s perfect, and now looks like a normal Jeep. Btw, these mods are almost free, since I picked up all the parts, wheels w/tires & tpms as take offs from new Jeep’s that were getting after market suspension systems. Also, these measurements were taken on my work bench, taking as much care as I could to make sure both springs were lined up the same way.

Reason I'm into this, I'd like to know if these springs are lift springs. I want to lower my jeep about 3". with that information, I'd be struggling to figure out what springs to get. With all the variation, it would be hard for me to figure it out. I'm going to try and get one of mine off of compression and measure it for length and maybe go from their. Thanks for the info, answers a lot of questions. I get 12 1/2 inches with it just setting there.

If they’re stock Jeep springs they will have a tag with a number as shown in my photo. Sounds like you have an aftermarket spring and likely, a longer shock and perhaps bump stop extensions - although some back yard mechanics don’t bother with the bump stops. If you want stock, just go to Craig’s list or kijiji and buy some. They’re so cheap they’re almost free. In fact, some guys will give away their almost new take off OEM springs. I’d give you mine, if you lived nearby. 14s/55s stock for a 2 door.

Thanks, my springs are the same color as the shock, the shocks are rough country, and I believe the springs are also. Theirs not tags on any of them.

I received some good info in this post on springs. I changed my lift springs, for springs off a Sarah 4-door. they are 17 AC and 59AA. they let me down bout 2-1/2 ". still a little high to soot me. would like to get down around 2" more. passed by a 4-door JK, yesterday and it was lower than mine. Any one got any clue to what number, I would need to get there. I think this jeep spring thing is kind of finked. Found one jeep had stock springs, but Lordy the driver sides were different number then the passenger side, came from the factory that way. Any ideas will be appreciated.

I’m guessing that the use of different spring specs reflects the specific options of each model and the extra weight one side carries more than the other. It sounds like your Jeep had the same specs each side so just stick with that. I would think that a 2 door jk spring spec like mine, 14s/55s, would give you a lower profile and still be a Jeep spec. Be sure and combine them with the stock hydraulic shocks. Springs are only part of the story with a suspension system. Although hydraulic shocks are softer than gas ones, there’s nothing wrong with them if they are in good shape and being used for every day driving.

when I put these stock springs on, I bought new stock shocks and installed. Thanks for the info. mine's got the heavy bumper, big winch
all them skid plates. I'd say its a heavy model. the lift coil's were stiff and heavy, 5/8" steel, they just didn't give. Ones I have now 1/2" steel, less coils and father apart. When I hit a railroad track instead of a thud, thud, I get a light thump. Like it, if I was just a little lower, be so sweet

One last question, need a answer hopefully before 11:00 tomorrow. removed lift kit replaced with 17AC 59AA from a 4 door Sahara. found a set of 14AC and 56AA according to info they will be about 1" shorter than the ones I have now. I have an unlimited sport 4 door, Will I have any issues. with running parts, axles or steering, drive shafts, by drooping down another 1" I need it bout an 1" lower

Up date. Removed the lift springs and shocks. Replaced with a set, of 17s and 59s , from a 2012 Sahara. Now I can touch the ground with the balls of my feet. Acquired a set of 14s and 56s., I will be trying those soon. One thing I noticed, if I measure the front and back of the jeep body, the rear is 1" higher. I now have a lot smoother ride, and a whole lot less side to side wobble. Love it.

The other factor @skyhookman is wheels and tires. On my 2011, the OEM wheels were 16” and the tires were 225/75/16. That’s a final step that will get you there, for sure, if you need to take it. Since most guys remove these smaller wheels and tires, you can buy them on kijiji or Craig’s list as take off’s for almost nothing.

I'm running 17" rims. I have a set of wrangler 265-70-17s for winter, and a set of wrangler 255-75-75s for summer. I think I'll keep 17s give me a little bit more axle clearance. The other springs should lower the body just to the right height.

@skyhookman - yes your 255s are 32” tires and the smallest OEM 225/75/16 are 29”. Quite a difference.
