Winches

My Tiny Travel Travel Trailer is almost done!! YAY!!

Sooo...I am going to concentrate on my Jeep now! WooHoo!! I always love a great project.
I am looking at winches. I am the type of person who likes things that dont require electricity. I realize a manual crank winch is difficult and hard to crank. I had an electric winch on my Samurai. Used it a couple times. No problems. But I am curious.

I did notice the the manual winches can take more weight than the electric.

I have seen 3 types. The ratchet, crank and the electric. What do you think of these 3? What are your pros and cons of each?

 

Manual? This isn't 1923...
If you don't want electric, use hydraulic. A hand crank winch on a Jeep is just foolishness.
And just FYI, no, a hand crank winch cannot take more weight than a real winch.

A little about why I prefer manual non electric "things".
I kinda dont mind it due to the fact we spent half our childhood on a mountain with no electric, water and phone. It was wonderful!

An Uncle was hit twice by lightening as well as my brother. Both survived. There was an incident where 2 cousins were hanging out with a friend and a storm blew in. One cousin ducked and their friend was killed. I was crossing a river with my dad when i was little and nearly struck. A couple of summers ago a storm came in and i went to roll up my truck windows, nearly struck again. Scared my husband. Another time i was little, i was in the house with my dad and the lightning came thru the roof! Scared us both! When I go to get gas...i rarely ever get a receipt. I used my card at walmart and it shut down ALL the terminals! I was with my husband at walmart again and his card flat out refused to work. His words...Electricity does NOT like you! A month ago his saw gear broke. My 3 yr old washer was possessed making all kinds of noise. I keep a thermometer in the fridge because it started to not keep temp.Had to have husband reset it twice. My husbands alarm clock has a high pitched wine. He is almost deaf and cant hear it. Im ready to toss it and get a manual one. My property does not have electric turned on. We have gone thru 3 lawn mowers, 2 chainsaws and 3 weed wackers. I finally just got a reel lawn mower. And..our house was also struck by lightening several years ago. Knocked out the sattelite Tv. I rarely watch tv. Didnt bother me much.

I have taken ALL these signs as a warning. Use it as little as possible.

 

Non-related experience aside, a QUALITY electric winch is the ONLY way to go on a JK or most other modern Jeeps. Very few if any have PTO ports on the transmission or transfercase. You can get a belt driven hydraulic pump to run a hydraulic winch. That you can easily install that in a JK is another question. And hydraulic winches are usually SLOW.

As Dirty Dog stated, any manual version I have ever observed is a lost cause. Those are pretty much a lost cause on a flat fender Willys that weighs 2000 lbs+ less than a JK. You can get the same results with a HiLift jack. Hopefully you don't have any commitments time wise because you are going to miss them.

I'm a die hard believer in Warns. I installed the Belleview M600 (the company Warn bought to start its winch lineup) on my 67 CJ 5 the year after I purchased it (purchased NEW). It is still on there more than a half century later. My Willys 3B has a modified Warn 8274, and the JK a 9.5 XPS. I don't wheel anywhere without a winch and it needs to work each and every time I need it. I'm guessing those get used on 90%+ of my trail runs, whether moving fallen trees or self extraction from mud holes/deep snow.

 

Im thinking you all are correct. The electric wench is the way to go.
Going up the mountain there are always fallen trees, the cliffs on the side of the roads are hundreds of feet down. It literally takes almost an hour to go up a mile on the old logging road. So i worry about getting stuck. No cell reception, tv nor radio. Maybe a small ratchet as a back up. My Samurai had an electric wench. Maybe Im psyching myself out. Whew!

 

You can get hydraulic winches that run off the power steering pump. They're easy to install and every bit as fast as electric winches. And they do not overheat during long winch sessions.

When did the conversation shift to robotic sex toys? I thought we were talking about winches...

You can get a manual come along that works fine. Believe me back in the day like in the 50s there were very few electric winches. Most were mechanical and driven by a pto.
Electric winches are a blessing. Simple, powerful, safe and easy to install.
BTW, if you want to learn about a manual come along, I’ve used one made in USA by Scott-Wyeth, and it works great. But my main trail vehicle is a Toyota with a Warn 10s winch.
