When asking about a vehicle, it will help a great deal if we do not need to guess at which vehicle you are asking about. :) hint...hint...!! lol

I suspect a Cherokee or Liberty...please correct me if I am wrong.

The light could mean a couple of things: It is possible you've engaged Part-Time 4WD and the light is just letting you know (it should be off if on dry pavement). Another possibility is you have a stuck transfer case indicator switch/sensor giving you a false indication light. Look at the transfer case selector lever ...if it is in 2WD then the switch is likely stuck. Obviously if it is in 4WPart Time then the light is a reminder ....*not* to drive the Jeep on pavement, and just move it to 2WD position.

If the switch is actually stuck, I recommend taking it to a trusted mechanic. There are more than a few internet remedies out there...but just trying to move the selector, then back up a little, and then move it again, is the general idea of them.

    I hope this helps.

Thank you. It is a 2003 Liberty Sport. I'll take it to a certified mechanic.

There's no switch, it's a lever on the center console. It appears to be in 2Hi because I can't move the lever any further down or forward.

the switch I mentioned is not one you hit...it is in the steering column. NBD However, either you have an issue or your Liberty is in 4Hi based upon what you have posted.

If you were not moving and (of course) the engine running when you tried to move the lever, it likely would not have moved. Here is what your owner's manual says about how to shift if your rig has Selec-trac:

"Shifting Procedure 2H to 4H or 4H to 2H Shifting between 2H and 4H can be made with the vehicle in motion up to 55 mph (88 km/h). The transfer case will engage/disengage faster if you momentarily release the accelerator pedal after completing the shift. Apply a constant force when shifting the transfer case lever. 4H to 4L or 4L to 4H With the vehicle rolling at 2 to 3 mph (3 to 5 km/h), shift an automatic transmission to N (Neutral) or depress the clutch on a manual transmission. While the vehicle is coasting at 2 to 3 mph (3 to 5 km/h), shift the transfer case lever firmly to the desired position. Do not pause in transfer case N (Neutral). NOTE: To shift from 4H to 4L, the shift lever should pushed away from the driver, and then rearward into 4L. In 4H, there is a neutral stop to prevent shifting into N (Neutral) by accident."

So start her up, start moving slowly and try to move the lever in the proper direction for 2H. (looks like that would be all the way forward)

I stumbled across this site while looking for an answer to this question myself. If anything it shows how many different conditions can cause the "Part Time" light to come up on your dash. I've been fighting with an O2 Sensor under my Jeep Liberty and have been banging and bumping and swearing trying to get the sensor out. I purchased a used 2007 Liberty last week and have been fixing small issues, like the driver's side seat belt buckle, and driver's side headlight assembly, and now working on the O2 sensor. To get to the seat belt buckle on the driver's side I had to remove the center console to remove the T50 Torx bolt holding in place to replace it with a new one. To Remove the Console I had to pull up on the shift lever to go from 2-wheel drive to 4 high, to 4 low. Then of course I had to return it to the 2-wheel drive position after putting the console back in. That's when the Part-Time Light lit up on my dash. Tried shifting it back and forth and moving it onto the grass to get that light to go away but nothing helped. This site came up on a search so thought I'd check it out and thought I stick around for a while.

My issue was an easy fix, just took a little time to figure it out. Turns out that when I put it into 2-wheel drive I pushed down on the front of the lever to make sure it was in 2-wheel completely and the Part-Time light came on. When I took my hand and barely applied some upward pressure on the shift lever the light turned off. It wasn't really enough pressure to move the lever just released any extra downward pressure on the lever.

Once an O2 sensor refuses to budge with any O2 friendly tool or slit socket its time to cut the wires, heat and the breaker bar. IMO to avoid issues stick with an OEM sensor
