Anyone give advice on painting black fenders on 97 Wrangler?

Such as, do they need to be sanded and what brand paint, and color that matches the original color?

    Thanks

    Welcome.

Do you mean the black plastic flare on the fender that turns grey with age? I think I read somewhere in the forum in a thread about products that turn them black again without painting. Can anyone chime in on this?

If you do paint them, clean them with a light solvent like denatured alcohol, and spray them with a plastiprep then paint them, or instead of the plastiprep and paint, you can use a special paint usually found in autoparts stores for plastic, like plasticoat.

Yes, that's what I mean. Autozone said use flat black bed liner paint. I don't want to use that. I want what makes it look original. Hopefully someone knows? Thank you very much for your reply, I will definitely do what you said.

IMO using bedliner paint on the flexible plastic fenders will increase your odds for a better DIY outcome. Check out CL or ebay for JK takeoffs. DIY paint jobs could have adherence or cracking issues. 3Ps: prep+prep+prep. Some u-tube videos have used heat guns successfully to bring the black back from faded fenders but screwups can happen too! Sometimes I wish I did not have painted fenders...too fragile for road rashes and faded ones give an excuse to check out Bushwacker or Metalcloak offerings

Yes, I saw that heatgun video. I tried that and was that a mistake. I don't recommend that. A car repair shop told me that the screws are really difficult to deal with as far a putting the screws back in. I'm just getting bits of information. I was thinking about taking them off to prep and paint until he said that. I went to the Jeep dealership and the parts guy said he has only seen mess ups and told me to take it to a car repair shop.

I have no advice on this. But I am interested in this topic because I plan on getting flat fender flairs in the future. And Im considering painting them. So any info is new to me.

From what I have read, painting the black fenders are tough. Best bet is to get the "Paintable" fenders if you want to paint them.

Thanks Chris. The fender flairs I'm looking at are either paintable or not. But I am looking at the paintable.

If you get those, and want them painted, you have a couple options. You can get MOPAR spray paint from Quadratec, or take them to a paint shop, and have them painted before you install. Generally, if you do that, its less expensive, as the shop doesn't have to mask, or remove things to get the job done. AND......in my case.....they do a better job :tumbleweed:

Check out the Bushwacker flat style flares which might meet your specs. The flat style flares have an OEM black finish or can be painted
