The 2018 Jeep Wrangler, aka the JL model, will supposedly feature an optional turbocharged 4-cylinder 2.0 300HP engine as an option instead of its regular V6. The new engine's codename is "Hurricane".

Spy shots of the new engine option:

Cool bit if trivia: The name of the engine is a great throwback to the old Willys 4 Cylinder Hurricane engine launched in 1950 and was used through 1971 with a few mods here and there.
I am in no rush to go diesel myself but that engine intrigues me.

The diesels available out there will and do get better mileage and have a neater install under the hood. This is cluttered and messy. Shame on Chrysler.

This is just a test vehicle...not a production release. It is all a bit messy yet. :)

I understand these are just rumors - but is there SERIOUSLY no Deisel option for the USDM market on these? Why on EARTH would we want a turbo vs diesel?

They install the diesel engines right here in Toldeo - then ship them off to Europe and other areas. Are we really that controlled by big oil here that we can't get a diesel motor in our iconic Jeep Wranglers? :(

I was going to wait for a JL. After a hearing of a structured roof with removable panels, Renegade lights, rearback up camera, I ordered a JK. Previous owner of a '95, '99, even the sluggish '08 JK. I had concerns then of the JK getting soft as I do of the JL getting soft now. I was wrong then. Am I wrong again or do the pics and spec leaks have anyone else worried?

You worried the top is not going to be the same and perhaps this jeep is getting soft?

IMO the 2dr + 6spd MT options are possible concerns beyond '18

Jeep has to meet increased safety standards that are coming up, these changes aren't by choice. Notice there isn't a HUGE body redesign. The leaked pictures indicate that the JL is going to lose that that feeling of freedom you get with the top down. The moderator is right we won't know until it comes out but it is going to be BOOM or BUST. Unlike when Jeep went from the YJ top to the TJ top where functionality was the only concern, safety issues are in play. No more roll bars bolted to the tub. Pillars are going to be installed that are mounted as permanent fixtures via welding to the tub/frame. An automatic folding top on two doors? Really? With space already at a premium, not to mention something else to break, (Will the top then be stuck open or closed?), where is the motor going to go? Reduce storage or clearance? Fold down windshield? I will never forget when I folded the shield down on my TJ for the first time in Murphey, NC. They even thought about losing the solid axles. That worries me. I took the one in the hand. Jeep wranglers lose on average 4% of their value in their first year if the new JL is that great I can get out of my JK easily and get one. The truth is I believe I will want to keep it.

Here I go throw my two cents out again. I have always been Leary of new models. Like to wait a few years for bugs to be worked out. Just because its new doesn't make it better. I hope they keep to the jeep tradition and not push into suv territory. The turbo 4 seems IMO silly for jeeps which require more low end grunt then higher end. If you have ever owned a turbo car or what ever you always had to be in the pedal for spooling (power). Yes they can work some magic with turbo size, waste gates etc.. Ive heard the rumor of lighter materials for panels, hood etc maybe?? Have you seen any of the new ford trucks with the aluminum bed that has been put to use - lots of damage and ripped aluminum. So what do you fellow jeepers think? Diesel engine sounds good for torque, but does require different maintenance, hand tools and most DIY can not work on diesels. This is generally speaking because I'm sure there are people who can.

I heard the turbo wasn't happening, and was a false rumor. Diesel seems to be a go. From what I have seen, it seems that its going to follow with the Jeep heritage, and not stray any more than the JK did.

I had originally read that the windshield would not fold down. However recent photos show a windshield hinge.

Have read that FCA rescinded the power output on the documentation filed with the NHTSA regarding the turbo 4. So perhaps the turbo 4 is still in the works but the power output may have been far fetched.

The hood is about 2" longer due to the larger transmission.
