I would start with checking all the intake air connections. Then work down to the O2 sensor wiring. Also check for any exhaust leaks.

Agree with Chris. Start where it won't cost you cash.

Did your check engine light come on? Did it start acting funny or runny like crap?

What do you mean by cheap gas dude? 91 octane whiskey? Vehicles today are manufactured to run on 87 to 89 octane. If you use anything else. The OBC will adjust for that octane. Unless your running diesel in a gas motor. It's probably not the gas your buying. What type of gas are you running?

If it turns out that cheap gas was the culprit avoid that brand/station because you might not be so lucky the next time.

I try to avoid the no name older gas stations, because you don't know how often they are changing the filters. QT out here, is a great station, as they have a 3 filter system that's always maintained.

Most of the brand name gas stations around me use the exact same distributor unlike the old days. Now it's all based on the brands unique additives and pump maintenance.

Wow. So it was the gas. I filled up today and made it a point to notice octanes. Regular Unleaded is 89. Ultra or what use to be call "high test". Is 91. Now someone please correct me if I'm wrong. But most vehicles run best at 89. And the added cost of the Ultra is a waste of money. Your motor doesn't perform any better as far as power and milage. Your OBC adjusts for the added octane. and runs as though you were running 89. Curious if this technology has changed.

Newer engines can run on any octane ratting. The higher the octane, the less the fuel will pre detonate. A lot of folks think you get more power using the higher octane, but it actually has less energy density than the lower octanes. Its made for higher compression engines. If you engine knocks or "pings" then its recommended to go up a fuel grade to see if that settles the issue. As aggrex said, most all fuel now comes from only a handful of suppliers, and the difference is additives. The government requires a min. amount of these additives anyway.

Yes....i remember from years ago. If your motor pre detonated. You would use a higher octane gas to cure/ stop it.

I worked at numerous stations years ago. And guys actually found a combo of different octanes that their cars ran best on. I'll never forget those guys. 10 bucks low, 15 high. And they stood there and made sure that's what they got. And for the most part. Muscle cars of the 70s or sooner.

Anyway. Thanks Chris. Haven't had a vehicle that knocked or pinged in years. Forgot about those symptoms of certain cars. Lol. And I agree you and aggrex. Today's gas is just not fuel. Additives etc. Have a lot to do with how our vehicles run.

Bottom line Billy. Happy to see it was just the gas you were running and not something more serious. Keep on Jeepin Dude

For what it's worth... the lower the octane like 87 it is high in Ethanol(10%) and has a faster combustion rate. The higher the octane like 92 it is lower in Ethanol(2%-4%) and has a slower combustion rate. E-85 is Ethanol and if you notice some vehicle that are flex fuel can run this stuff because it is designed for it. Non flex fuel vehicle are not designed for it and are extremely bad for them. In any case Ethanol is not good for any vehicle long term and is hard on internal parts. Think of it like this, 87 octane uses all of its energy right when it is ignited and 92 octane uses its energy slower throughout the entire power stroke of your engine. This is why you achieve more power with higher octane's.

Ethanol is an "Octane Enhancer". E-85 is actually closer to a 100 or 105 octane fuel, and is awesome in turbo, or supercharged vehicles that can run it.

You are absolutely right it has high octane levels such as 105 however E-85 or Ethanol-85% which it is short for reduces horsepower by 30% and fuel mileage by 15%. It is also highly corrosive inside the combustion chamber deteriorating the metals and fouling the spark plugs... not something I would run in a performance car or truck. Not saying that I like the "google tech" but information on this is just a click away.

Bottles of ethanol-free fuel when I can afford it makes my gas trimmer, mower and tractor run so dang smooth. Not a fan of E10 but fuel choices are limited locally.

Yes, but the higher grades of fuel have the same "10%" Ethanol depending on region. Out here, all grades have the same amount of ethanol regardless of the grade. 91/93 octane fuels are not given the advertised rating based on the amount of ethanol in the fuel. The octane rating is independent of chemical additives, but is a factor of how the hydrocarbons are arranged to make up the fuel .

91 octane is not necessary. I doubt that your issue is a fuel problem. What does your air filter look like. Maybe time to change it. Chris has great advise on this thread.

For the record, ethanol is pure corn alcohol and has a very high octane level. They balance the octane level with lower octane gasoline to get the 10% ethanol mixture in the 87,89,91,&93 octane ratings. If you want ethanol free fuel, you have to search for it and it has to state ethanol free gasoline on the pump. We have stations along the coast here in Texas that have it for people who have boats, because the ethanol gums up your injectors and carbs if it is left sitting for any length of time.

12 mpg. Wow. Not good dude. Nothing personal Billy. But I've seen rigs with 40s regeared getting at least 15 and better. Way so bad mpg? What gears are you running? What did you recalibrate to with your what....35s on 20s?
