Wheels size and backspacing for 285/75/16 tires?

I have a 2000 Tj that I just installed 3 inch teraflex lift on. Looking at 285/75/16 AT tires. The jeep came with 15 inch wheels. Want to buy black steelies. Wondered what size and back spacing I need? Thanks for any help

 

So you are lookin at 285 75r16s. basically 33x11x16. These do best with an 8 in wide wheel. You have a 15in. wheel now. I would get a 15x8 wheel and run a 33x10.50x15 in tire. the 15x8 wheel for the TJ usually has about a 3.75in backspace. You will save some money too by going 15in diameter wheel and tire. 16in wheels are a dying breed. 4wheel parts only offers 4 16x8s as apposed to 16 15x8 in steel wheels. Also if you don't mind running a little wider tire, there are many more options for the 33x12.50x15 tire.

Peter thanks so much for your response! If I go with the 33/12:50 / 15 and 3.75 backspacing do you think there will be much of the tire that sticks out? I think the wider stance will be better just no a real fan of the tire sticking way out from fender flares.. thanks again for info..

If you go with the 15 x 8 wheels Peter suggested. Which I would. They will hang out from your fender flares. But not by much. My opinion. They'ed look nice.

Edit. I actually wanted to put that size tire and wheel on my JK. I really like that look. But I was talked out of it because where I bought my set up didn't think a 3" backspace would work. They wouldnt clear the calipers. So I went with 17 x 9s (with a 4.75 backspace) with 33 x 12 tires. Anyway...Peter is the most knowledgeable and most experienced member here when it comes to tires and wheels.so I would highly suggest his advice. Other issues......well.....we'll talk about that later. Lollll.

 

The tire width is not what is going to make you stick out. It is the Wheel. Both the 15x8 and 16x8 you mentioned earlier usually comes in a 3.25-3.75 in back space depending on the manufacturer, but over all there is not much difference between them. Even with the more narrow tire you will stick out about 2-3 in past the stock fender flares, but you can correct that by ordering 6in stock looking fender flares, or do like me and order some 6 in flat fenders. There are several out there Xenon and Bushwacker to name a couple. The 12.50 is only going to stick out 1/2inch more than the 11.50 you mentioned in your initial post. If you don't want to stick out and you don't want to get new fender flares, your best bet is to keep the factory wheels and get 33x10.50x15s. You might rub on the control arm a little in full turn, but you'll learn not to turn that sharp after a short while.

 

All right i went to Discount Tire.. and talked over a lot.. been looking over a lot of pictures.. Think I am going to Go 33x12:50x15 Good Year Duratracs.. 15X8 or 15X10 steelies??? any thoughts

 

Sounds good Steve. Just a thought. Check out Quadratec. They have mount and balance combos with tpms. Free shipping. Also, if you live outside PA. Tax free also. That's where I bought my set up. Had them in less than a week. They do have the Duratracs and they may have the wheel your looking for.

The 15x10s will stick out 2 inches wider on each side. If you are wheeling that is a good thing, but if you are mainly street it doesn't matter. You did say that you don't like to stick out that much so in this case think about the 15x8s. Both will look good. I personally like the massive tire look and the 15x10s really let those 33x12.50s open up. Do you have a lift on your jeep?

well.. I called Quadratec before I ordered to make sure the tires and wheels with 4.0 backspacing would fit and the guy said I would need at least 3.5 inch to fit 33inch tires.... When I asked where they would rub that I have about 6 inches of space from my 31's he kinda go snooty with "Sir... they will not fit" So is everyone else I talked to wrong??

 

Quadratec prides themselves on their customer service. I've been dealing with them for almost 15 years. And I've never had an issue. My guess is. You got that one douche bag every company has. I agree with every one else here. They will definitely fit. I'm running 33s on 17x9 wheels, with a 2 inch lift. And they fit just fine. If you want a pic, i'll post one

I agree with Chris4x4. They are very seldom wrong. Also, my bad, not real familiar with TJs either.
But, what you could do. Your going to need 5 correct. Buy one, mount it but don't drive it. It's it's scratched they will not take it back. If it fits. Buy the other 4. I know....pain in the ass. Just thinking out loud. Plus the fact they have a cash back deal going right now. Could be in your best interest to buy from them. Out of curiosity. Does discount tire mount, balance w/tpms and ship free?
This is the best close up I could get you right now Swood. 33s on 17x9s. But, on a JK. Not a TJ.
Another thought. Call,the number you called. Get extra. 360. His name is Dave. This is the guy I usually call if I have an issue, which is very seldom. But he knows his shit. Give him a shot.

 

thanks for the pic.. looks great. I just found a Tire fitment guide for lifted jeeps on the QT website and it shows 3inch lift with 33's no modifications needed.. it shoes minor mods for 34's. Must of just got a bad helper. Thanks for insite

 

You will fit them with a 3in lift. Under a hard flex coming straight down off a cliff you might rub at the top of the fenders Lol. Metalcloak says if you run their fenders on a TJ you can run 35s with no lift. I don't think you will have any problem.
