Ughhhh, Cranks good bit buzzer and dome lights dim, not enough power for fuel pump either

    hello, so on my 1989 Comanche 2.5, I went to start it, and the buzzer was very quiet, cranked just as fast as usual, but no start because there’s little to no power going to everything else besides the starter?? I’m thinking ground on engine block? Once the starter has its own ground? And battery is good, as well as cables etc.

    Yeah, I would check connections.

    Maybe check the fuses also.

    Also when the key is out of the ignition it still buzzes, just even slighter?? It shouldn’t buzz at all with the key out...

    When I fiddle with opening the doors, it gets power as it should, and everything works on accessory, but when I turn the key on it power stays for 3-10 seconds then cuts out.

    The only thing I can think of that would give power to absolutely nothing but the starter would be the engine block ground... Because the starter isn’t grounded to the engine block. Checking that now.

    Was the vehicle starting normally last week/month? Any previous work done or replacement parts? The battery could appear fine until a heavy load is applied like the starter then voltage drops. Remove, clean and inspect all connections even at the starter/solenoid. Get the battery checked out for a dead short in the battery. The starter is suspect if a direct connection to the starter fails to turn it over.

    It started no issue last week. When it first happened, I checked and replaced battery terminals, and checked voltage on the battery(12.63V). Put in a different battery that I bought a month ago just to see, no change. This issue happened after I removed my transfer case, but no wires or anything were disconnected. Then it started and ran again no issue for 3 more runs, and was all good until I tried to turn on my lights, then it cut out, but I know it’s not connections to the battery. I’m stumped.

    Starter checked out good, with key on, I have good voltage to battery still, and good voltage from positive terminal to engine block. I have no clue what the heck is going on!!

    Also just for kicks I took off the engine ground and cleaned it, no change.

    Well I figured it out! For anyone who has an issue even slightly similar to this, I highly highly suggest you check your braided ground wire that goes from the back of the pistons to the firewall, mine looked okay, but when I wiggles the wire I watched my dome lights flicker, I changed out the wire and off I go with my Comanche! I also suggest replacing it with a thicker braided ground wire. The grounding was so poor on these old Jeeps, and a thicker one will improve many things.
