Welcome! The Sahara model is a nice optioned out base Sport and can be very capable in the right hands. Post some pics with options for some friendly critque. Tell us a bit of your plans as NC has plenty of beach sand to traverse.

I live close to the foothills and travel mostly mountains. Not much there for rock crawling.
I plan to enjoy jeepin' and doing some off roading. In my searches, most jeeps are ragtops.
I want a hardtop. Which is better, buy one installed or get a ragtop and have a hardtop put on?

Since mine is currently a DD a hard top is needed to take care of my stuff. Hard tops are better for winter, noise and securing things but are restrictive unless you have a hoist, second person and place to store. Soft tops make sense if you DD with nothing to secure and want to enjoy the freedom from tops. Ez to enter uninvited and ez to coverup for a sudden shower. Hard tops are not super heavy but they are awkward to lift single-handed. Jeep sells dual top options but in reality they are mutually exclusive as only one can be installed at a time. Each brand of soft top has unique parts while each brand of hard top simply has bolts and defroster/wiper/spray connections

Depending upon the year Sahara you choose (stick with the correct generation), the YJ>TJ>JK has not changed significantly such that a CL deal on a hard top might be found from owners that do not have a place to store or find the hard top too restrictive and may become a deal for you. Aftermarket or new hardtops are quite spendy. After market new soft tops are reasonably affordable and have all the unique parts you need to assemble the kit.

    Welcome to the forum Ken.

My input. I agree with all aggrex stated. Hard tops have much more to offer as far as warmth, security, along with removal and storage issues. I have a soft top which I love. But if I had the option, which I didn't, I would have preferred the hard top. As aggrex stated. Soft tops a relatively cheap. But I do have the room and space to store the hard top. And the soft top would be installed at least 6 of 12 months.

Jeeps have many advantages and a blast to drive. But as far as I'm concerned. You haven't experienced it's full capabilities until you've gone naked. Doorless and topless.
