Have decided to take the rear seat out permanently so the dog has more room (he's old and needs an orthopedic bed back there). I have a harness system for him that works off the existing seat belt locking mechanism. Only thing is, the female end of the seat belts are only about 12" long, and I have to stretch the male end of the seat belt almost to its end to click it, and it remains under his bed. So I think it's possibly a little uncomfortable - he may feel the seat belt pulling the bed up a bit, but more importantly, I'm wondering if by being compressed under there it would affect the split second timing of the seat belt locking mechanism. It's one bolt holding both (female) seat belts to the cargo area, and I'm just thinking of drilling a new hole and moving it closer to the tailgate. I haven't crawled under the car yet to take a look but it's late, I'm up, and just figured I'd ask if anyone's done anything like this or if anyone knows of a reason I can't move it.

The OEM seat belt attachment point has been tested to pass crash and safety standards for occupants. IMO if moving the seat belt attachment point will improve the harness system for the dog it could work. The new attachment point(s) could be reinforced similarly by using metal plates and large washers. Should be enough to restraint a pet.
