    Allen,

First of all Welcome to Jeeps.net.
Secondly I would agree that it does sound like the rear differential is on it's way out but I will let the more knowledge members chime in.
    They should stop by soon.

Welcome! Is the fluid level correct, and filled with the proper fluid?

This is a hard diagnosis without actually being there. Are you sure it is coming from the rear end. You say a roar? Is it a high pitch squeal like a bearing or a mid pitch wine like the gears not meshing or maybe dry. Have you checked the fluid level in the rear diff. Do you see oil dripping or have you noticed it dripping, it could just be dry. If you are dry it can roar. If you have enough oil and it is roaring i would guess the pinion bearing has gone out. Right now it is a jeep fix, but if you chip a ring gear it becomes a bigger fix. I would guess that seals and bearings on the rearend should cost you around $500 at a shop. This is all considering that it is the rearend. I would like to here some others chime in on this one.

Check all your Ujoints in the rear and front shaft, I fought my YJ making the same sound and it turned out to be the axle side U-Joint on the shaft. Would only make noise under throttle.

Pull of your rear pumpkin cover and take a visual inspection. Look for any metal shavings in the oil or any chipped or worn teeth. Even if everything looks great, at least you know now and you're probably due for a fluid change anyway.
