    Ramp Travel Index or RTI is a way to determine a vehicle's ability to flex or articulate. You place a tire on the ramp and drive up the ramp until another tire tries to come off the ground (typically your rear tire on the same side).

    If you wanted to compare how your Jeep did on the ramp compared to another Jeep or vehicle you can't simply compare how far up the ramp you traveled. A JKU will travel further up the ramp than a CJ5 but that does not mean they did any better. You must incorporate the wheelbase of the vehicle to obtain a score. A typical RTI ramp is 20° but can be up to 30°.

    Let's say a JKU traveled 100" up the ramp. A JKU has a wheelbase of 116".

    To get the score you divide the distance traveled up the ramp by the wheelbase and multiply by 1000.

    100"/116" x 1000 = 862.07

    Let's say a 1980 CJ5 went 80" up the ramp. Almost 2' less than the JKU, the JKU must have better articulation.....right?

    80"/83.5" (wheelbase) x 1000 = 958.08

    958.08 > 862.07 In this case the CJ5 flexed better than the JKU. These numbers are all hypothetical of course.

    A score of 1000 means that your rear tire is at the front edge of the ramp and is considered a "perfect" score. Some custom build rigs can ramp over 1000.



    So you don't have a ramp available but you still want to see what your score would be. If you have a fork lift or an engine hoist and can lift one tire off the ground you can still calculate your score.

    Measure between the bottom of the tire and the ground.

    Take that measurement and divide it by the wheelbase and multiply by 2924.

    Use my XJ as an example with the passenger side front tire 33" off the ground.

    33" / 101.4" (wheelbase) x 2924 = 951.60

    Huh.......Yeah. Just thought you drove up on this ramp thing. And who ever flexed so completely out of shape. Risking injury to spectators with flying springs. Cant even tell its a Jeep any more. And you win. Lol.
