Cylinder head diagnostic need opinions.

I recently got a 2007 Jeep Liberty and I can’t get it registered because of a check engine light on. I took it the auto-zone for a diagnostic and it pulled up a cylinder head issue. But it drove over 150 miles that day and runs like no problem. The owner has said there may be spark plug issues so I was wondering if anyone knew if this is a common problem or even a possible issue.

 

Park around the corner, clear the code, and then get it registered.

Also did you purchase it with the check engine light on? If so I would clear it anyways and see if it comes back.

Welcome! Local auto parts stores may offer free CEL inspections or lend their code readers or sell you one. As @Prerunner1982 mentioned get the code read then cleared and get it registered. Hope you had a great deal as buying a vehicle with CEL can be risky no matter what they say . Post up the code(s) identified and some pics of the new Jeep. Disconnecting the battery could clear the code temporarily until the problem(s) are resolved.

 

It was actually given to me by my mother thank you for the tip I’m gonna watch some videos on how to clear it thanks guys!

 

I have disconnected the battery and touched the ends of the battery cables together. Once you reconnect and restart the code "should" be cleared. The Jeep may run a little rough as it relearns some parameters.

On the other hand a nifty tool to have is an OBD2 bluetooth (or wifi for iOS) reader.

Not only can you read and look up check engine codes you can clear them as well. You can also view data in real time as the vehicle is running... pretty handy. I use it with the Torque app.

 

I just watched a video on the torque app I think I’ll get on e from a local shop though to save time.

At Prerunner's suggestion I purchased this scanner and . . . It is awesome. Cheaper than any store bought and the Torque program is the best with lots of options including suggested fixes to a current check engine light code. I also suggest that if you know the code to go to Oreilly's and ask them to look it up. They will also have the suggested list of fixes, but theirs is listed in order of fix most likely to repair the issue based on prior repairs i.e.

Code 1??? = cylinder misfire

Repair vs. # of people who said this fixed the problem

change spark plug / 2200
Spark plug wire / 780
coil pack / 320
injector / 113

etc etc

The above is what Oreilly's report for an issue would look like.
