New 16x5.75 steel rims

    Bought a set of Omix Ada steel rims to use on a 1980 cj5 I am rebuilding. Not sure what previous owner did but calipers rub on 15" rims. 16" rims fit well but I noticed that the rims actually measure 4.75" and have 16x4.5k stamped on them. Finding tires to fit such a narrow rim has proven to be a challenge. Coker tires have some options but they seem to require tubes. Has anyone had any experience finding tires for these old styled rims? The calipers and rotors appear to be relatively new. Could it be that the previously owner used a wrong caliper which is causing the clearance issue?

    Which rims are you wanting to put on? The 15 or 16"?

    I probably would go with the 16" since that means I would not need to figure out why the calipers interfer with the rims (and I really like the retro look). However, the only tires I have found to fit the 16" rims are bias ply and require a tube.

    By the way this has been a 2 1/2 year project which started out as a simple frame repair and engine overhaul and has morphed into a serious case of the "might as well" which included a new frame, tub and fenders. I am seeing the light at the end of the tunnel and really don't want to try figure why the calipers rub the 15" rims. I could write a book on the pitfalls of these replacement body parts.
