While driving about 35 mph suddenly felt transmission slip but quickly reengaged, no heavy noise other than what sounded like free wheeling neutral and maybe a little unfamiliar squeaking. Continued driving for about a mile and happened again, within a half mile it completely disengaged and I could not get it in to any forward gear (still had reverse). Checked fluid while cold and definitely not empty.

    Any thoughts?
    Possibly linkage?
Don't know much about the AWD hub locks, is there something I should check there?

    The joys of a classic.

Definitely no sounding good, esp the no movement in any forward gear.
Engine will start, check to see if it start in D, this would ck shifter. BE CAREFUL !!

400s are not a prohibitive price for rebuilds, they are old school, if you are wanting to tear into it or do some pressure testing let me know and I will get a manual to you,
