Engine keeps running when key turned off

    There used to be a story out from a well known Jeep Guru that the resistor wire could be replaced using a standard wire with a diode. This of course would prevent backfeeding. I would suggest not using that wire twist method as it could corrode and interrupt the circut. I have tried soldering my CJs resistor wire, but just can't get it to flow correctly.

    Ok....here's a good one...relating back to my early part of this thread..have that half second delay between when I push the footfeed down, and when the engine revs, so I decide to advance the timing a hair...don't mark it, as soon as the bolt breaks, the distributor leaps counter clockwise a half inch..ererrrer, no start, One hour of trying to start going back and forth, itiwants to run but wont ..of course I don't have a timing light..BY mechanic here...rookie backyard...now an afternoon later, it won't even kick...BUT, I look down, and my broken alternator belt is laying on the ground..Considering my electric situation, is there any situation where an alternator not running would keep it from turning over..? Just need some piece of mind to get some sleep tonight..Having fun..

    @Jjack ...with your electric system all jacked up (pun intended) anything is possible. Generally vehicles can start without an alternator belt. Run like that for an extended period of time then things start getting dimmer and dimmer.

    That's what I thought too..I'll get that alternator diode made up, I'll pick his brain, and get back..in the picture, there is a red wire wrapped around a heater hose..That has 12 volts coming out with key in on position....gad!

    Ok here goes for all that are still checking..
    Below is a pic of single line diode..I installed it between the black and white wire..see org. pic...when the distributor lurched and I couldn't get it to start, turn over not even a hint of start..strong battery, fuel gauge half full, good to go..it wanted to...you know how you can tell, but... nada, no matter where I turned the distributor..ok now I need a timing light, thinking...thunking..thonkin...hey wait a minute..org. pic.!. just happens to show the position of distributor...lovely..take time adjust, perfect....ahh..nothing..thinking, thunkin, ...well it's either spark or gas...
    Pour some raw gas down the carb..try..Chuka Chuka die...oh baby...gas gauge 1/2, .....add 2 gallons of gas,..try...pump pump pump...like butta!
    Got the dash apart anyway, no warning lights or temperature gauge working...new temp. Sndg unit, grounded the wire, nothing...Bend the fuel gauge arm to the red zone, and the best part, it shut off when I turned the key off.mmmm..and this is why old mechanics look for a good hobby..thanks for the feedback and research..I can't think that of anything that didn't help me to what I got done...

    Almost, now in for trans and a little muffler work...but I drove it there..pretty squirrly after new tie rod ends...

    Sorry late to the party. Glad you got it working.
    That alternator is definitely not for your Jeep, by the part # it's for an 83 Jeep Wagoneer with a 4.2 liter 6 cylinder.

    I also don't believe the black and red wires are factory either.
