This is not a long trail but it certainly has some excitement. My “dear” friends have been dying to get me on this trail since Joe discovered this one. You know the kind of friends I am talking about….those that think causing you to lose control of your bodily functions is absolutely hilarious….yeah, those friends. Actually they are not that bad but they do enjoy shaking the cage I keep my comfort zone in. So I knew this would not be a relaxing and leisurely 2 wheel drive venture into the hills. Well, I was right. This trail has some minor tippy spots. It also has some interestingly thin spots along the way. Both of those things have been known to cause me more than a bit of anxiety. However it is actually the “driving up/down a brick wall” kind of steep hills that give this trail it’s real excitement. My recliner at home does not lay me back as much as I was while going up some of these spots. I still need to wipe the lip marks off the windshield from the trip back down these cliffs we were driving down as well. And yes, there is loose gravel and shale to keep you from getting bored while you recline. I know the first time Joe did this trail he had to engage his lockers but he had not aired down that day. I dropped to 12 pounds and really did not experience much slipping though I did engage my rear locker, just in case, on one hill as we were coming back out. I think the spot qualifies as the steepest section of road I have done. The Beaverslide is not even slightly steep in comparison. And of course, in this particular spot you are on thin section of the road, climbing a stupidly steep hill with several curves in it and loose gravel for frosting. I do not know if I actually needed my rear locker but I was not taking any chances at that point. I am glad it is not a really long section because I think I may have stopped breathing, and several other bodily functions, about half way up. I started breathing again after I got out of my Jeep at the top. I will let you know when the other bodily functions assume normal activity…it may be a bit though.

Truth is, I don’t think I ever slipped a tire I did not try to make slip but I doubt I could have done that without airing down a good bit. I think at least one hill would be at the upper limit of what Jeep says is safe in my rig so I am sure glad I did not need to try to stop in the middle of it. Though it is possible it just “felt” that bad. I would be cautious about what rigs you put on this trail. I would be hesitant to take a full size but it would not be impossible. Bald tires would be a mistake and while I really did not need to use them, I think a rear locker should be in your tool bag before doing the whole trail. I would also think twice before taking a carbureted rig up this though. However, if I am interpreting my GPS data correctly only a few spots exceeded a 50 degree climb . Most Jeeps are rated to 60 degree climbs though my personal inclinometer will have sucked the covers of my seat cushions by then. It sure felt much steeper than that so someday I will go back a measure that hill. Stay safe and happy wheeling.

The photos are from the scenic spots from before and after the trail. There was just not good spots for taking pics while in the think of it. Sorry...

This is a really nice overlook on the trail to the Skyline Mine above the Elkhorn Montana ghost town.
