Don't know whether it's from the transmission or the transfer case. The transmission dipstick has nothing on it. Started somewhere on my way home 10-15 miles away on the highway. Transmission fluid is all under the vehicle from the transfer case up to the radiator. It's also on top of the majority of the engine. Smoke came from under on the passenger side. The whole way the transmission never acted up. The engine temp and oil pressure stayed normal and no check engine light came on...when i bought this jeep, the transfer case had a hole on the bottom and he jb welded it closed. Its broke 2 front drive shafts on the CV side where its connected to the front axle and ive been driving it without the front drive shaft since the second one broke. Transmission had been running DEX III.
When I added Lucas to the transmission, I didn't drain a quart, I just added the Lucas on top of it but it shifts waaaaaayyyyy better. Maybe it was overfilled ? Bad transfer case ? Blown transmission ? Bad torque converter ?

Its my only source of transportation right now and use for work.

Can i just add fluid back into the transmission and drive it ? Or would i need a new gasket too ? If its the transmission...

The one positive is you made it home. Imperative to find the source of the leakage before driving or adding fluid. Confirm that the fluid is transmission fluid. Check the transmission lines from the trans to the cooler. Power steering fluid? Axle fluid? Then focus on that JB weld repair on the T/C.

Over-filling the transmission or any other operating system is never recommended. Check owners manual for proper fluid level inspection.

OK from what I see and smell, it's transmission fluid. The fluid is pinkish in color. With the engine on and in park and on level ground there is absolutely nothing on the dipstick. It rained last night, whenever it dries up a little I'll go and check those lines. I shouldn't buy a few quarts and watch it leak ? Or is the pan gasket possibly ruined ? I just know it smoked a lot and transmission fluid was everywhere, but the transmission never slipped, hesitated, shifted hard, or stopped shifting and when I got home the dip stick is bone dry...

OK I let it sit overnight to dry up everything. I started it and reversed it to another parking spot and shut it off. New fluid was leaking and coming from the front, because there wasn't any more old fluid from yesterday towards the rear. Checked the lines running to the cooler and the top one is fine but the bottom one looks to be modified with a hose, or is it supposed to be that way ? The hose is less than a quarter inch away from the fan blades and seems to be cut open a little...

see if there is an auxiliary trans cooler - if so this is the cooling line routing...

5.2L have some different set ups.

The hose is cut and sprays transmission fluid everywhere. I just had a buddy Shifting the gears with the Jeep started while I watch from underneath. It was like a samurai sword slicing an artery

Consider yourself very fortunate that the jeep is still functioning. Replace with proper hose and trans fluid and on to the next issue. Make sure the new hose is secured away from any sharps.

I'm starting to consider it lol ...my next issue is this popping as I turn as I'm reversing...think my control arm bushing is bad or needs tightened... according to other forums, but the bushing doesn't look normal to me. Ill start another thread or I may have one to update

Is the diagram I added correct? I think the lines should be clear of fan as they are outside of the shroud....
Even less lines to deal with without the aux cooler... let me know....

FYI: A samurai was a god like warrior with amazing abilities revered by Japaneses, and rained supreme until a handful of US Marines made clear who was superior. :oldglory:
