Ok - I bought a used 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland with 90,000 miles on it and after first week I’m having problems. It’s stalling out and throwing a PO339 code and the sensors have been replaced three times. First time was with generic cam and crankshaft sensor parts. 2nd and Third time is with Mopar at the Chrysler dealership. Every mechanic thinks they have it fixed but immediately/or after a few miles the car dies again. It seems like they are having problems getting the sensors to stay programmed. Any ideas or thoughts??? Please help if you can....

    It’s a 2wd and 5.7 Hemi btw
Also it was driving great at about 55mph - 65/70mph. Felt a little rough...like it was missing.

4BT Diesel in 97 TJ, Totaled 2011 Wrangler rebuilt, painted and lifted.
We had a customer return multiple times for a alternator not charging after replacement. I found intermittent field wire function (broken wire inside the insulation). Trouble codes log an issue and leed to a starting point--but. Replacement of the sensors requires the removal of the connector and manipulation of the wires. Connector pins-male-female bent/broken or wire to connectors broken, who knows. Old school before OBD-OBDII-CAN was a wiggle test on the circuit to verify continuity---to---the sensor. Sensor works but not connected, sometimes? Now CAN will tell you it cannot see the component not just failure of component.

Interesting because the last work that was done on it was an alternator replaced. Would that throw the cam and crankshaft sensors codes...?

Tomorrow they are supposed to replace the VVT Solenoid. It just seems simpler/easier than this...

v Lets get the details and gather info then get some info posted.

You are at a authorized jeep dealer?
Did you ask them to diagnose the p0339 - or to replace the sensor?

The code is a WIRING circuit issue - so changing the sensor would be last suspect.
Yes it is necessary to use jeep parts esp sensors.
Post all codes and ANY modification, add ons, recent repairs.....

    Doing VCT solenoids because?

Yes at an Authorized Jeep Dealership.

They said the P0339 was the sensors code. They took it upon themselves to replace the cam and crankshaft sensors.

Doing Solenoid because they suspect the timing is off...?

The first place I went to was not a dealership but he was doing the same thing. Both places just felt they should replace the sensors...the dealership was positive that would fix it. Dealership said they did check all the wires...but I suspect that isn’t true. I mean I don’t know what to do since I’m not physically watching them check this stuff...

So if the sensor is the last suspect - what would be the causes that you would suggest first and what would keep throwing them like that?

This reminds me of my Dads actions years ago as an honest TV service man. Changing one bad tube after spending considerable time testing many tubes meant no steak that night. But changing multiple "suspect" tubes meant filet mignon that night.

1st - Again I ask is jeep STOCK - any modifications, other codes....

TMI: the PCM is seeing an intermittent signal, either no signal or incorrect signal.

The signal is observed as a wave form* looking to see if missing or incorrect. Kind of a EKG signal we recognize from TV but more to it. The tech needs to compare a good waveform from (jeep wave form library) to the screen on scanner. A simple overview Often shaking wiggling tugging harness trying to disrupt signal. And again other issues, other codes and aftermarket BS can exasperate issue.

PS: excuse my squiggle red underline.

    below is 3 separate attachments
    1 possible causes
    2 trouble tree 'note'
    3 a waveform for understanding

This Dealership also says they don’t have a scope...

I’m thinking what/why on that scope!!!!

I did not see a TSB.

We posted the trouble tree likely 'causes'
the multi replacement sensors did not cure this,
    the wiring is confirmed,

I think you should ask about the results of tech observing wave form.
Was there anything in freeze frame to help.

As far as the bore scope to ck the tone ring... they do not have one IDK what to advise... what did the dealer techs suggest?

sorry its getting late - I will ck back in AM

The Dealership says VVT Solenoid would be next thing to check/change. The Tone ring is what my friend and I came up with analyzing the problem. I personally think it’s a wire...but how can I confirm they checked all the wires? How is there going to be a wave form without a scope? Excuse my ignorance - I know just enough about cars to be dangerous and I get the principals. I’m more old school and to me it feels like a spark plug is out once it gets into 60 - 7mph. It also feels pressure related with no gas going to the car and stalling. But I guess these can all be causes from these sensors not working/programming correctly.

the sensor is just a messenger, although some sensors require a relearn - basically letting PCM know a new sensor - erase any learned or 'adaptives' , a new and therefor slightly different (variables) to learn.

The tone ring will not move and the CKP will not see a change due to VVT activation.

If the issue was timing there would be a sync issue - the CMP and CKP not see TDC at same time, a common scanner observation checking sync.

The speed you notice issue - does it happen at speed OR at the RPM at that speed? Try a lower gear at same RPM.

The bore scope and a waveform are different tools, I could imagine no bore scope but not a graphing scanner missing from a dealer level tool 'kit'.

Did you purchase fro a jeep dealer?
And if yes . . the next question is was it certified used?

I’m sort of joking but I’m sort of not. I have a decent understanding of what’s going on...but I still don’t know enough to question them or know more than them. My knowledge on this is limited...I did make this though the first day when I was trying to bypass something.
