1998 jeep Cherokee classic has door locking/unlocking problem. sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. passenger door lock makes a ticking noise when I push the door lock on drivers door. nothing will lock or unlock electronically. any help on how to fix would be very helpful.

I will assume you have a 4 door Cherokee. From the driver door nothing works. . . but does the passenger door power lock button work? If so i will assume then that it is likely the switch panel that needs to be replaced. Does this one look like yours:

If so you can get it here:

    https://www.carparts.com/details/Jeep/Cherokee/Replacement/Window_Switch/1998/REPJ505201.html?TID=bngpla&origin={adtype}&msclkid=df2f16d4dfd4109971c44c3d15916921&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=CPS-BNGPLA-Margin 20 to 29 percent&utm_term=4577747943696003&utm_content=CPS-BNGPLA-Margin 20 to 29 percent-Fast Mover Adgroup&gclid=CPDSqNWd59oCFfaPxQId_4gDwA&gclsrc=ds

If the passenger door button doesn't work you will have to dig deeper and figure out where the problem is like 2oldjeeps says. The switch is the most common problem though.

The door lock circuit is actually in the passenger door. I have an issue with my 00 XJ where they will work only occasionally and I can hear one of the relays clicking.
You can get a replacement Passenger Door Module (PDM) from RockAuto for about $60.
    https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=934939&jsn=1&jsn=1
    or $40 from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CJINHC...OJ&pd_rd_r=PKKN1P9ATZF9BMEYDMWP&pd_rd_w=lFArQ

The passenger side module isn't as easy to open up as the driver side so it may be easier to just replace it than try to fiddle with it.

Now if you are having problems with your power windows working from their respective switches and only working from the driver side that would be faulty solder connections for the child safety switch in the driver door master switch. The hardest part here is getting the tops off the switches in order to open up the module.

I have a 1998 Jeep Cherokee classic 4 door, 4 wheel drive. I read every ones messages and thank you for the responses. OFFGRID the power switch on my jeep is the same as the one in your response. I had the switches on drivers door and passenger door replaced. also the wiring harness that goes between the drivers door and body had a broken wire. that was repaired. mechanic told me the switches were working fine. picked the jeep up after work(7:30 pm). opened drivers door, pushed the switch. did not work. drove it home. next morning opened drivers door, pushed switch. still no work. drove to work, pushed button, they worked. the window switches work fine. Now I am back to the same problem. push the lock switch on drivers door and the switch on passenger door will tick, push the lock on passenger door the locks will work. then next time push lock on passenger door nothing works. go to drivers door push switch every lock will work. then next time push switch on both doors all will work or not work. if any one has idea as to what I can do next let me know. I will sure try it. again I thank you for your responses. have a great day and be safe.

Im just guessing here, but sounds like a loose or poorly contacting ground. What are your thought @Prerunner1982 ?

Quite possible, poor ground can cause some funny things to happen. Unfortunately I don't know where the ground for that circuit is.
Could also be one or more broken wires from the passenger door.

I never thought about the ground wire. However I did think there could be another broken wire. I will have the wires on the passenger side checked. When I bought the jeep it had the owners manual in the glove box. In the manual it shows the wiring circuit for the locks. I myself might be able to find it. I have to work the next 3 days. Will give it a try on Monday or Tuesday if it is not pouring down rain. Thanks guys Have a safe and enjoyable weekend

Curious if you ever figured out the problem? I'm having the exact same issue. I use my keyfob the lights in the cab come on and I hear a tick from passenger side, but the doors do not unlock or lock. Same from hitting the button on the doors. I'm leaning towards a bad ground but not sure where the ground is for this circuit
