Hey guys, I'm new to the Jeep world and I live in a part of Oregon that requires the Greenmachine to pass emissions every 2 years before registration.
It failed pretty bad. Like 5 times the allowed amount of emissions.
So, I need some advice that will help me make the Greenmachine road legal by passing the test.
Any and all fixes would be appreciated, short of telling me to move or to register it somewhere else etc.
    Thanks in advance

Not sure of the year of your CJ, it would help to know. The heart of the emissions system is the O2 sensor located at the top of the exhaust manifold. If you tap onto the wire coming out of it to the positive end of a digital voltmeter and connect the negative end to the battery negative, it should produce .1 to .9 volts at a variable rate. If it does not it is dead. This is covered in a website that a guy put out many years ago on how a late model computer controlled CJ works: http://gleebledorf.com/. This is on an '85 CJ7, but all the later CJs are pretty close. Good Luck!

Yeah....my first thought. Why did it fail? Inspection gives you a print out correct? That's a good place to start. @Greenmachine . Helps us....help you.

    Hey guys,
First let me say thank you to everyone trying to help. Secondly, I should have said exactly what the Greenmachine is to make it easier to give good accurate advice.
It is an 83 CJ7. My son took it to get it to pass the Oregon emissions test (DEQ) Dept. of Emissions Quality, and the print out said it had about 5 times the allowed emissions blowing out of it. :goingcrazy:
I asked on here for help and failed to give enough info for any of you all to do that. I then asked a guy at church that is a diesel mechanic that also is a Jeep enthusiast if he had any ideas and yesterday he retarded the carb and told me to fill it with non E fuel and give it a try.
I took it in :fingerscrossed: and the tech needed the VIN which we found on the drivers side firewall (Still learning the rig :)) and then with the tail pipe sensor in he entered the VIN.
What happened next I don't know if it was a tech mistake, divine intervention or what but usually I am told to rev the rpm's to about 2500 on the screen they provide but buddy just says "Ok, you passed" :bananadance: so i couldn't get my card out quick enough to pay the guy. I get my certificate and cruise on out. I hear something behind me and he had left the sensor in my tailpipe. I missed it because I was so happy it passed I was just trying to get outta there.
So, here I am with a grin and the ability to register it now.

I'm looking forward to getting it out and muddy and dirty and hopefully hauling deer and elk in the back. :jeep:
