My TJ has an aftermarket roll cage that was never painted. I have surface rust coving much of the cage so I need to get that taken care of and get the thing painted. I'd love some input. Should I pay to get to get it sandblasted or wire brush it and acetone or something else? As for paint, is it worth it to powder coat it versus hitting it with a rattle can? If I rattle can it, should I leave the cage in and tape and poly everything or is it worth it to remove the cage?

Bonus question! My cage isn't mounted to the frame and I need it to be. My cage currently has a floor plates so I'm thinking of a floor plate on the underside with a bushing and finally welded to the frame. Is there another route that I should consider?

What your saying will work tying it into the frame like that, with the bushing of course like ya said. But another option would be to get a piece of DOM .120 tube slightly bigger than the leg your tying into. Cut a hole in the floor board a little larger than the tube and slide the tube up thru floor onto leg and weld it on then fab it to frame and weld in. Just another option, but either will work.

I would rattle can it. But my jeep is pretty beat up and all my tube fenders are rattle canned. If I scratch the tube fenders up wheeling I go over it with a $3 can of blk paint to prevent rust and I'm done. If your worried about looks I would go powder coat all the way.

    Just my 2 cents

Oh I like that idea using larger pipe off the frame and welding it to the cage! I hadn't thought of that. Thanks for the idea.

I'm leaning towards rattle can. It's not a show truck and touching up the cage easily is a plus... as is cost.

I wire brushed my factory bar, and can painted it. No rust yet except on the floor where it get wet, but I do like the powdercoat that I put on my full role bar. They sand blasted it first before coating it. If I had to do it all over again I'd powdercoat it all.

Hopefully he will post some pictures soon, I helped him a bit with the rattle can and it came out much better than what I thought it would.
