Holy crap. Whatever it is. I'm guessing it did not come stock on the Jeep. What is it attached to? Whats on that side of the engine compartment? Maybe a bigger pic would help.
BTW... @Danboi98 . Hopefully some one jump on and help.

does the jeep have an air compressor for setting tire pressures?

The QD for airhose has me guessing that what was done here circled in yellow...let me know... then I would guess a air filter.

to me it looks like an improvised/homemade inflation system...IE plug an airhose into it and air up your tires, blow dirt etc...

Could it be a repurposed a/c compressor that now 'flates the tires? Looks like it. If it is, that is the air filter on intake.

That's an accurate assessment. Some jeepers have repurposed the a/c compressor for on-board air supply. Post up your jeep intro / jeep story.

I have on of those on my CJ. You could look on the net for more info, check "on board air" There should be a switch somewhere that turns it on, then a limit switch that shuts off the compressor, then there should be air from the air chuck. Sometimes there is a lubrication system for them. Look for an air tank on your rig, probably underneath. What guys do is use an air conditioning compressor for an air system to air up after a trail ride. They come either homemade or in kit form.
