Not sure if this is an engine or a transmission problem. After a while driving with no issues of shifting, except a little rough on cold start, my shifting starts to change. This is after sometime of driving, mostly on the highway. Things are smooth in the beginning and then the shifting jumps if I take my foot off the gas and back on. Sounds as if the engine is sucking in air or the gears are free spinning in the transmission. As my speed starts to decrease I get a sudden jerk as if it wants to stop for a split second and acts as if it's not downshifting but free spinning. If I put my foot on the gas after that it jumps and continues to accelerate as if it's stuck in that gear. While it's doing all this, the RPMs are over 2,000 and can get a little over three thousand depending how fast I'm going. Once I let off the gas and the needle is dropping on the RPM gauge and hits 2,000 it does the jerk like it wants to stop for a split second. The video I'm posting is of the RPM and how it jumps from 2,000 to 1,000 and back to 2,000 and then decreasing normally. I'm not sure if I have a big vacuum leak or a transmission problem like a clogged filter or something more.

    What is that red light?
My thoughts - like a broken record check codes.
transmission issue is likely, SO what do we know of history - maintenance, fluid -full, colour, any particles and smell are clues.

Lets put a trans filter and fluid on the to do list, you will need ATF 4 - not universal or 1 type fitss Alll just ATF 4, and a visual inspection. We will get into this when you are doing the filter etc.

    I hear the trout rising....

Not sure of the filter change, but the fluid was changed and DEX/MERC was put in before I got the Jeep some months ago. Not clear if he changed the filter or not. But I'll try to squeeze that out of him and get back to you...

Put the right trans fluid back in and change the filter to eliminate a variable.

    do not try to flush.

drop pan, inspect, replace filter, refill with ATF4.
    @ 6 quarts -

If you never have done this look for a youtube tutorial 46RH trans

What about the torque converter and it having Dex Merc already in it? Is it okay to just drop the pan replace the filter and put 6 quarts of ATF 4 with the Dex Merc in the torque converter ? I've never replaced the filter on a Jeep but I've done it on numerous Chevys... Plan on buying most of everything I need this Thursday or Friday having it all by next week.

One drain step will never be a complete flush. Probably follow @Awrench steps for now. In order to achieve a greater removal of dex-merc multiple drain>refill>run steps can be done if necessary.

TMI from the OEM manual..... dexron is not ideal BUT not the end of world...
This fluid filter is a 1st step in a shifting issue - a hail mary - there are other issues with bubbas jeep and I think the flush can wait...

"The recommended (and preferred) fluid for 46RH
transmissions is Mopar ATF Plus, type 7176. Mopar
Dexron II fluid can be used for topping off the transmission
    fluid level during normal maintenance
checks. Dexron II can also be used for refill after
overhaul if ATF Plus is not readily available."

Dexron II I think is what I have in it. So no need to buy ATF fluid and just buy the filter and replace it ? Or by 6 quarts of ATF 4 to replace what comes out of the pan when I remove it?

ATF like this ? I also just got word that the transmission filter was changed when he changed the fluid. One of the codes and the only code that pertain to the transmission was the solenoid wires being damaged due to being burned... You think maybe that maybe my shifting problem ?

Here are the codes and their definitions.

12 - Direct battery input to PCM was disconnected within the last 50 Key-on cycles.

45 - Overdrive solenoid - open or shorted condition detected in overdrive solenoid circuit.

51 - A lean air/fuel mixture has been indicated by an abnormally rich correction factor. (O2 sensor)

17 - Engine did not reach operating temperature within acceptable limits. Engine does not reach 20 degrees F. within 5 minutes with a vehicle speed signal.
