    Hi guys,

Just brought home my Rubi Unlimited.
I still have the last installment to pay, and a part of it is an extended warranty.
If it were Japanese car I would know I needed it like the last year's snow but with Jeeps my experience is ... well....you know...Chrysler, this says it all. Love is blind.

The warranty is by Zurich for the dealer. Supposedly works everywhere and if brought to the dealer they eat the deductible.

I know extended warranty is frowned upon by Consumer reports and I never bought it before. But with my Grand Cherokee in and out repair shops I thought I'd reconsider.

    What are the opinions?

Well, I bought the 1st year changeover JLU Rubicon so an extended warranty was a must.
    6yr/70k.

It's just peace of mind for me. Lots of electronic gadgetry and stuff.

With the heavy electronic and feature laden JLU I'd definitely consider an extended warranty. Make the best deal on the warranty but also go through the fine print for parts+repair coverage, OEM parts, etc. Check the for policies on DIY mechanical/electrical jeep modifications, off-road usage, etc.

Mike you might also check with your bank or Credit Union and see what "warranty" they have to offer.
If you plan on modifying the vehicle check over the coverage to see if mods will void the "warranty".

Just let me summarize what happened to my Grand Cherokee over the 10 years since I bought it new. (In the end I will compare it with my wife's Honda CR-V).
    Love is blind.....

    Well....

    1. Tire pressure sensors: changed twice. At first $100 apiece (they crack), then when warranty expired, $200 apiece. During the year 2. Then after 8 years all 4 had to be replaced (one Schrader barrel just broke in half....corrosion due to dissimilar metals with the metal cap; the rest cracked and leaked air). Total expense - $800.
    2. Speed sensor. Don't remember the expense. Maybe $200 or more. The ABS system wouldn't work without it. Year 4.
    3. Sunroof leaked, year 3. WD40 it, haven't used since.
    4. Starter went, Year 6. Replaced, $800.
    5. AC compressor went, year 7. Replaced, aftermarket, $800 including recharging.
    6. Power WIndow cable got ripped, year 8. The whole assembly replaced, $600.
    7. Year 8. After replacing pressure sensors (aftermarket) and putting new tires (original type, Fortera) after 1/2 years the air started leaking in 3 out of 4 tires. Degraded from having to add air every 3-4 weeks to 1 week now. Suspect aluminium weel hubs (no nails, screws). Nothing has been done so far.
    8. Year 9. Front passenger side axle bearing went. Dealer's price - $750, went to PepBoys, aftermarket $450.
    10. Year 10. A bearing in the rear axle (do not know which one) - have not yet replaced: if traded in, no sense to spend money. If not (they will offer very low price and I will keep the car that my son in two years will drive) will be app. $1,400.
    11. year 9 - power windows switches oxydized badly, require several attempts to activate. Will probably repair myself with some contact cleaner.
    12. Cruise control: went a few years ago, I know it's been at least 5 years since it stopped working. Could be earlier but I do not use it so probably found out by accident. Not repaired - not required. If repaired, would probably be on the order of $1000.

Well, this to me exceeds even the overly expensive ($3,200 10y/125K) policy I have been offered at the dealer.

For comparision, my wife's Honda CR-V had only one problem: it leaked Freon from the AC, one day before my AC went, only hers required recharging only. This was it. Over 11 years.
