U joints? Knuckle? Should this be moving ?

Greasing some stuff and checked this . Doesnt seem normal. Ideas?

 

Hard to tell from your video. But no....there should not be that much play there. Again...Hard to tell, for me anyway. But it seems the cv joint is toasted. I'm sure some one more knowledgeable than myself will jump on.

 

Yes, it is hard to tell from the video. There should be no clanking of course. Look closely at the cv joint assembly for slop between the u-joints and the cv joint housing, to indicate wear from the u-joints. Or is the clanking coming from where the driveshaft goes into the back of the t-case.

 

Sounds like the majority of noise is coming from where it connects into the tc. But the whole joint assembly did have some play. Thinking about rebuilding the driveshaft and replacing the seals to the tc. I dont think I need a whole new shaft right? And could this kind of play damage my tc?

 

You could just replace the u-joints as the cv joint is pretty expensive, and go from there. If you get any vibration, the you have to go to a driveshaft shop. I would recommend a Dana-Spicer u-joint.

As mentioned start with the u-joint replacement if that's the source of noise or looseness. Generally the drive shaft should be fine unless there was damage from road debris or jumping curbs etc

Ok, so I've removed the rear driveshaft. And the shaft and joints feel ok (lol) but it's this that's moving and that has play. What is this, the crown? Knuckle?

 

That is the pinion yoke, and it is normal for there to be slight play. How far do you have to rotate the pinion yoke before the axles engage?
However it looks like you are due for a pinion seal.
Is there any side to side movement of the yoke? You may need a pinion bearing as well.

 

@Prerunner1982 for the pinion bearing ot seems like I'll need to remove the rear diff cover to remove that? I'm sure I can pull the yoke without a special tool , but is the bearing simple to replace? I went ahead and picked up a seal . Was hoping to replace both at the same time.

 

Nvm. I tried a 1/2 impact, 1/2 ratchet with a cheater bar. I cannot get the bolt for the yoke off. E brake is on. Sucker is not budging. Also @Prerunner1982 ther No side to side movement in the yoke. All of this is trying to diagnose a low whine/moan/grown when I'm turning around parking lots or into my driveway. Sounds like something is cocked/bound up when I'm turning at parking lot speeds and angles. I'm in the process of re doing all the rubber underneath so maybe this noise is coming from steering components.
