I'm new to the Jeep world and looking for advice on selecting and installing a new lift kit including some suggestions on shops in the North Chicago area. I'm not looking for anything extreme as this vehicle will be a family vehicle for the kids that are about to be driving age. I bought a manual transmission in the hope they focus on driving rather than texting.

Welcome to the site! What size lift are you looking to get? Specific tire size? What kind of off road do you do? And, whats your budget?

3 inch zone lift. Fox 2.0 shocks. 35 inch nitto ridge grapplers. Bushwacker flat fenders. No name steel bumpers front and back for now.
Some 33 inch tires without a lift will get you up in air just a little bit. Or you can swap out your stock fenders for some flat ones and you'll be able to get 35's stuffed in there. You can do all of that with out installing a lift kit and it will get you some height and a cool stance

Welcome @ChicagoGuy2019 ....finding a good 4x4 shop anywhere can be a challenge in urban areas. Join a local jeep 4x4 club to gain some knowledge about jeeps and the good local shops that jeepers had good experiences. Post your lift budget so we can provide better answers to your lift question.
Seems the millennials I encounter or my kids don't want to learn manual transmission so its great to hear you will be training them on the fine art of manual shifting. Doubtful whether MT will impede texting but it will make them more engaged with driving conditions on the road. Because it's a Wrangler the handling quirks and high center of gravity demand respect to drive safely versus the average vehicle.
Look at some budget lift kits from TeraFlex or Rancho to get a better perspective of whats out there.
