Hey! Just put it all back together after replacing the head gasket. Was very happy to hear her turn over and purr to life. Then the engine started racing as if I had the accelerator on the floor. I shut off the engine when it hit about 3k rpm. I never touched the gas.

started it a few more times with the same result. Checked throttle linkage and they seem fine. What am I missing?

Welcome to the forum @Dax42 . That Was going to be my suggestion. Since you removed the linkage and all concerning the top of the motor. Gotta be something there. Replacing head gasket it self. Would not cause a racing motor.
Double check throttle linkage and all concerning the throttle.
Post up if you find the cause.

Your intake manifold is not fully seated, 100%. Very common occurrence when doing a head gasket.
