Previous owner had some engine work done that didn't go as planned, so he ended up selling his CJ to me. During the test drive phase I noticed Permatex sealer between the block and head, so I planned on some work there. I pulled the head this past weekend and took it to the machine shop to be checked. All of the head bolts were around 60ft lbs and it looks like someone reused the head gasket. I was lucky it made the drive home!. There was quite a bit of sealer laying the lifter galley, I used a flex claw tool to pick it out. On a positive note, the cylinders look real good with hardly any ridge. Here's a pic.

Right off hand I would suggest checking the flatness of the head and block and use a quality head gasket like a Fel-Pro. An overheat can warp things up a bit if that's what might have happened.

Yes, I ordered a Fel Pro head set and the machine shop is checking the head and tapping the valve cover holes. I'm going to re assemble and see how things go without decking the block. If the block is warped, then it's probably time for a 4.3 swap. I'll post results. Thanks!

Back from the machine shop. The head had been rebuilt sometime in the past and all checked good, had the valve cover perimeter bolt holes tapped to 5/16, left the two factory 1/4 alone, either going to use studs or button head bolts in pictures. The exhaust manifold got new studs and drilled and tapped the 2 EGR tube holes for pipe thread and plugged them. Also, tapped and plugged the EGR port on the intake and plugged the rest of the sensor holes. The Weber 38/38 showed up last week, now I'm waiting on new head bolts. I'll post results when I get it back together and running.
