Question for the experienced locker folks. If one were to do a locker on one axle to start, which one do you do first.

    Front or rear??

This would be on a 1999 XJ w/Dana 30 front and 8.25 rear 4.5” lift on 33x1250 tires

I'm waiting for the jeep porn. :anonymous:as mine is a 97 red 4 door so I've got a idea on lift from your build. I heard people do rear but not sure.

Hey @BigNuge . In most cases when lockers are installed. Usually both are done at the same time. But if you have a 4x4. The rear. What type of system you looking to do? Air, electric......

Ive always done the rear first. In my Rubi, I hardly ever lock the front.

Locked up front and rear is a great way to go. If you do not have a locker up front though, and get a tire in the air, it will start spinning and when it contacts a surface like a rock on its way down, It will break the front u-joint. Seen that quite a few times.

Thanks for all the input guys, keep it coming!

I'm thinking e-locker at this point. I’d like to do both, but trying to be budget friendly. I’m also considering a gear job, so complete gear job @ 4.10’s and lock one axle would be my approach (for now).

If you're going to regear that is the best and most cost-efficient time to add the lockers. Depending on how you plan to use your jeep will dictate what kind of locker and gears. The big tires will also have an impact on whether to beef up those axles.....its just money

Some jeepers do just fine with Detroit Trutrac in the front axle and run e-locker or Trutrac in the rear.

Several very good points made up top. @aggrex @Jim Beam . If your doing a gear change. Best time to install a locker kit. Since dif is open and your axle in pieces on the shop floor. And you have the funds. Best time to make the change. I'm no expert by any stretch. But both an air and e system. Kinda over kill. Unless your looking to back up one, with the other. They both have their pros and cons. Comes down to what you invision, needs, what you and want for your build. Both are great kits.

Seems like the best route would be to do a selectable locker of some sort in the rear first. Then, sometime down the road (when I’m ready for a re-gear) do maybe an LSD up front...?

Trutrac mechanical LSD would make a great choice up front
