I wonder if it is by design or it is a malfunction.

In my JLRU When I press my Air Recirculation button (the one with the arrow making a turn back) the light on it comes on (also the A/C turns on but I turn it off) and the air is recirculated. After a few minutes (2 or 3) the light on the button goes off and by the feel of it the air is not recurculated but is drawn from outside. If I press it, the cycle repeats itself.
Does anyone have the same problem? Is it normal? Or is it a malfunction?

    Hey Bob,

    So....

So this is what I have done so far: I made an experiment.
I remembered that I started seeing this after I did something. Then I realized that I had my Air direction mode as "Window+Passenger".
So I switch it to "Passenger Only (the arrows pointing to chest and legs)".
After that the phenomenon stopped. I do not know if it is simply takes more time to switch or it has stopped altogether when in this mode.
Today on my way back I will see if it will switch off in 30 minutes it takes me to get home.

    So.....RTFM.

    From the manual:
    >>>>
Recirculation can be used in all modes except for Defrost.
Recirculation may be unavailable if conditions exist that could create fogging on the inside of the
    windshield.

    There's the answer.

Glad you found your answer. To block an offending odor (i.e..diesel exhaust) recirculation mode is important but under the right conditions recirculation mode will fog up the windshield. Even my 15yr old Tundra cancels recirculation mode when defrost is selected.

That's the thing: if it simply didn't allow the recirc to turn on during the defrost it'd be easy to understand. But turning it off after 5 minutes.....not as obvious.

    Additional noted thing:

So, the recirculation turns off automatically in 4 minutes not only when it is in defrost mode (blower's sign shows the curved arrows up alone or together with the blowing on human), but also when the blower is set to blow on legs only without any defrost.
Legs and chest is when it does not turn off.

    No rhyme or reason....
