Thanks! I suppose that would be a deterrent.

Now to get the last few tweaks done and get it painted up.

So I was wondering, anyone out there build their own swing out sore tire carrier and have any suggestions for a gas piston to help control the swing arm? The arm moves silky smooth, and extremely easy...almost too easy, so I have to guide it open so it doesn’t slam against the stop.

Any length and weight suggestions would be appreciated!

Haven't seen a gas piston used on aftermarket bumper or frame mounted tire carriers. Perhaps DIY experimenting with some HD hood struts since they can support hoods that usually require two people to carry. Aftermarket hood struts are available in different lengths and weight capacity which could provide the minor resistance you're looking for. Disclaimer: not a pro but an avid DIYer...lol

Ok....So my bad. Been a little busy. Trying to hide from COVID19 taking up alot of my time  So anyway.
Cute kid...kinda looks like he's happy not jogging along side the XJ.:p.....good to see spare off the roof....bumper and tire mount look awesome @Bigmattjeep . Nice work dude. Nice diff cleaning. Looks good too. No chips, or missing spines is always a good sign. Dude....they super clean. How many cans of brake cleaner you use? Nice. Apparently your Jeep OCD as bad as mine.. I use LubeLockers also too. Worth their weight in gold.

I may be lagging behind. :annoyed:. But I'm still here. :bananadance:.

Lol, we have all been navigating the apocalyptic landscape lately.

I appreciate the input. My OCD gets me all the time. Im sure we’ll hear from BigMattJeep soon.

I used 1 1/2 cans of brake cleaner on the diff service. Though, I put the cover through my parts washer, so that reduced the brake clean I needed to get it all cleaned up. I hate using just RTV for gaskets, I don’t care if that’s OEM! I bought LubeLockers for both covers, I’ll be doing the rear diff service this weekend. One of the primary reasons is that I’ll have these open a few times over the next year or so, front pinion seal is leaking a bit, going 4.56, and would like to lockem’.

@aggrex has been great! His input has been very helpful! I’m a life-long DIY’er myself (if that wasn’t obvious by now).... Having said that, I’m cognizant of the fact that there is likely someone who has done it better, and just May have some input on the project!

Hopefully meet you guys someday, a cold beer and story telling....

Got to fabbing up the lower tie-in brackets for the bumper, and fabbing up a tailpipe hanger. Got it all painted up, drying tonight.

Moved on to mounting my ARB compressor. Ended up using an unused bracket from an ATV winch mount kit, worked out perfect.

I have to get some nutserts for mounting the bracket, then it’ll be in.

After that I’ll be mounting up my Spod. Time to add some electrical goodies....

Got the Switches mounted up. Waiting on some new grommets for the firewall penetration. I’ll have it all wrapped up over the next week.

So, question to all the Jeep steering guru’s out there. This damn thing drives terribly still. The wandering is a real concern.

I did a bunch of research, found countless threads, and checked things several times over. Here’s what I came up with.

    Suspension components, tight & new.

Steering components, tight and in good condition and/or new (brand new ball joints/all).

Had my wife turn the steering back and forth while I laid under the Jeep, everything moves nicely, not slip seen.

Measured/checked toe, found it toed “in” 1/8”

Checked caster, found it at ~14% which comes out to 7-8deg

    I’m at a loss guys....what am I missing?

My guess is caster correction. In comparison a stock JK has about 4* caster

Every single post I have ever read (other than your above lol) about XJ’s has told me between 7 and 9, and I’m right there! I’m not afraid to adjust it, but I would want to be 100% certain that’s the right move.
