I am looking to install a CB radio into my 66 CJ5. There does not appear to be a “fuse box” or any other connector between the battery and the electrical system. Is this normal? How would I go about installing the CB into the electrical system? Thanks!

If you have no fuse box or cannot locate the fuse box use a 60-80amp circuit breaker from the power source to bring 12V power into the CJ. Consider a generic relay box spod-like product that can supply switched+ fused 12V power for optional accessories like cb, external lights etc. Somewhere in this forum I posted about my relay box, S-Tech and have used jeep tailored products in my other non-jeep projects for safe reliable switch systems.

Thanks aggrex, Sounds like a good idea. Most of the wiring seems old and crusty. Would it be a good investment to install a new wiring harness and add the relay to the new harness?

The generic spod-like relay box, circuit breaker for example mounts in the engine compartment connected to the battery separate from the main harness which makes it a safe addition and invisible to modern PCM controlled vehicles. One bundled cable from the relay box enters the cabin to power up to 4 to 6+ switches to control different 12V accessories.

Hey agree, I am installing an aftermarket fuse box. I’m not finished yet but will post pics when done.

    Hey Everyone,
So here is what I finally purchased. Is this a good choice to power cb radio, lights, stereo etc? Where is a good place to install, engine compartment or under the dash, under the seat? Do I want constant source, ignitions source or switched source power? Thanks for your advice!!

Also one other question: I think I should have a fuse between the relay box and the power source? Correct. Something like 60-80 amps?

Look at how fusible links are installed in wiring diagrams on the later CJs to protect your older CJ. You can also mount them side by side to handle more current. For mounting a CB radio on your CJ, install it so both driver and passenger can access it. A CB radio is best wired to switchable power with a fuse of course.
